

She was born in Newellton, LA to Festus and Flora Duvall Turnbow. Betty was a Lake Charles resident for the past 66 years, being raised in Russellville, AR. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Lake Charles. Betty retired from the Sherwin Williams Paint Company. She loved working on genealogy and had traced her ancestry back to William Brewster, who came over on the Mayflower. Betty loved communicating on the CB Radio using the handle “Hummingbird” and her husband used the handle “Falcon.” She enjoyed traveling out west. Betty was a great seamstress and sewed for all of the girls events. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her sons, Richard Cossey and wife Gayle of Lake Charles and Steven Cossey and wife Jeanie of Westlake; daughter, Judy Bertrand and husband David of Houston, TX; son-in-law, Thomas Mitcham (husband of deceased daughter Jana Mitcham) of Plant City, FL; 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.M. Cossey; daughter, Jana Mitcham; grandson, Paul David Bertrand; her parents, Festus and Flora Turnbow; and sisters, Reba T. Goodner and Inez Bennett.
Her service will be at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 2p.m. Rev. Randall Humphrey (grandson) will officiate. Burial will be Highland Memory Gardens cemetery. Visitation is Saturday from 5p.m. to 8p.m. and will resume on Sunday at 1p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
