Custer Payne Hannan

Custer Payne Hannan died on Oct. 17 in Bedford, TX. Custer was born in Lake Charles, LA on May 29, 1915. He was the oldest of five children born to Edna Pauline Lynd and John Albert Hannan. He graduated from Landry High School in 1932 and was the school's oldest living graduate at the time of his death. He worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 38 years and was foreman of the round house when he retired. He was a past Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge 238 in Ragley, LA. He held membership in Woodmen of the World. He married Ruby Williams in 1937 and they were married for 56 years before her death in 1992. He married Geraldine Norris Bumpas in 1994. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lake Charles for over 65 years.

Custer is survived by his wife, Jerry and one daughter, Anita Hannan Peterson and her husband Stan of Bedford, TX. He is also survived by his granddaughters: Suzanne D'Payne Peterson Matthews and her husband Mark of Grapevine, TX and Sally Mason Peterson Scherer and her husband Dan of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are four, great grandsons: Jack Peterson Matthews; Jeremy Sellers Matthews; William Daniel Scherer and John Hannan Scherer. Additional survivors are Jerry's family, a son, Ron Read and his wife Noel and their three daughters and families.

Custer is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Ann Hannan Taylor of Friendswood TX; sister-in-law, Effie Dae Horn Hannan of Westlake, LA and a brother-in-law, Harvey Dodson Dever of Sulphur, LA. Other survivors include numerous, dearly loved nephews and nieces.

Custer was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Gordon Patrick Hannan and his wife Bobbie Foster Hannan; his brother Albert John "Ikey" Hannan, his sister, Barbara Frances Dever and his brother-in-law Carmac Taylor.

Visitation for the family and friends will be at Hixson Funeral Home from 4 -6 on Thursday evening. Graveside services will be held at Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley, LA at 10am on Friday morning.
