

He was born in Crowley, LA in 1932 to the late Edmond and Eva Champagne. Following high school he proudly served in the United States Army as part of the infantry during the Korean Conflict.
Nelson served his community as a fireman with the City of Lake Charles for 25 years and then continued to serve as a Calcasieu Deputy Sheriff for another 18 years before retiring in 2000. In addition to being a fireman, he also worked as a longshoreman.
Nelson married the love of his life, Mickie in 1957 and they loved and laughed for 60 years as they raised their 5 children. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to campaign for political causes.
Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, and 6 brothers. He is survived by his loving wife; Mickie Champagne, daughters; Cindy Champagne and Karen Raduenz and her husband Dwain, sons; Terry Champagne, Brian Champagne and his wife Erin, Randall Champagne, 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and sisters; Dorothy Hoffpauier and Mildred Richard. He will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew him.
