Marie Martha Guidry Savoy was the youngest child born to Edgar and Annaise (Herpin) Guidry in the Coulee Croche region of St. Landry Parish. She passed away peacefully on July 13, 2012 at High Hope Care Center.
As a child and young woman she worked in the cotton and sweet potato fields, as well as, being a sulky jockey in the local “bush tracks”. Martha would also accompany her father on many “bals de maisons” playing as he provided accordion music. She graduated from Sunset High School in 1941.
She married John LeeRoy Savoy on January 11, 1943. After moving to Lake Charles, she worked for Southern Construction Company as a secretary. She later went to work in the insurance industry; obtaining licensure as a commercial insurance representative. Martha retired from Mid-South Insurance in 1999. She often credited her ability to speak French as a way to open doors for her in the insurance business.
Her joys in life were her Catholic faith and family. During the early to mid 1960’s she taught CCD at St. Margaret’s Church. She fully supported her husband and sons in their variety of interests and endeavors. She treasured time spent with her granddaughters. She enjoyed baking her peanut butter cakes for family and friends during the holidays. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters, and the Cajun French Music Association.
She is survived by her two sons, Wayne Roy (Eva) Savoy of Lake Charles and Timothy Jude (Annette) Savoy of Moss Bluff; three granddaughters, Tessa Savoy Webster and husband Chris of Pensacola, Florida, Kyra Savoy of Lake Charles and Jaala Savoy of Moss Bluff; and three great-grandchildren, Sofia Lane Webster and Ella Marie Webster of Pensacola, and Knox Wayne Guidry of Lake Charles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, her parents, and her eight siblings, Inez Persley, Lilly Richard, Yolande Miller, infant twin brothers, Jerome Guidry, Shelly Lockhart and Eugene Guidry.
Pall bearers will be Sam Hebert, James Savoy, Brian Arceneaux, Glenn Comeaux, Dwight Comeaux, David Comeaux, and Anthony Comeaux.
Vistitation will be at Hixson’s Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Monday, July 16th from 4 pm to 8pm with a rosary at 6 pm and resume Tuesday, July 17th at 8 am until service time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Margaret’s Church in Lake Charles at 10 am and interment will be in St. John Berchmans Cemetery in Cankton, LA.
