Mrs. Frank Elton Salter nee Sierra Nevada Self Salter, Born – June 22, 1912. Mrs. Nevada was born in the Beulah Community of Sabine Parish to the pioneer family of: Mary Almira Sibley Self, February 3, 1980 – Deceased May 17, 1975 and Claudius Leo Self, August 11, 1890 – Deceased May 17, 1972. She was home schooled until she was seven; then attended the Evergreen one room school house and promptly went from first grade to fourth in her first year. She graduated from Negreet High School in 1928 at the age of 15 as the valedictorian and then attended Normal State College in Natchitoches. She graduated in May 19, 1931 with honors in English, Spanish and Speech. She started her teaching career in Florien and met and married Frank Elton Salter on April 15, 1932. Her teaching career included Pleasant Hill, Many and Kinder. She was a poet, play writer and an avid basketball fan. She was active in Little Theater plays, her church, D.A.R., Book Clubs and Delta Kappa Gamma. An avid traveler, and an absolutely wonderful daughter, mother and grandmother. My mother was first and foremost a teacher, both professionally and in her private life. She taught, not by lecturing but by example. Where we all fall short of perfection, she always tried to live the life she felt was right. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her true pride and love. Reading was her passion – that and keeping her independence. She, until health prevented, was most active in her church, First Baptist. Quite always a lady of unselfishness, we celebrate her life with deep gratitude and much humility. Thank you Mom, MawMaw, and Mrs. Salter. From your admirers: Her grandchildren are: William B. Baggett Jr. and wife, Rae Lee, Judy Blaire Baggett Masselli, Christopher Frank Baggett and wife, Jane. Her great grandchildren are: Catherine Blair Baggett, Annie Maselli, Kara Jane Baggett, Kaough Baggett, Molly Jane Baggett, Sophia Rose Baggett, Leo Augustus Baggett, Blake Soto, Erin Casey. Her sister-in-law and first cousins, Juanita Salter Edwards, Ruby Anthony, Dixie Sparks, Lillian Sibley. Goodbye and God rest – until we meet again. The family wished to extend their thanks and appreciation to her doctor, Dr. Lynn Speight, and her caretakers, Patsy Prejean, Eunice Joubert, Katine Flott, Velma Scruggs and Paula Hardy. Arrangements for Mrs. Salter’s funeral services are being handled privately, under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com
