Sylvia R. Welke

Sylvia R. Welke, age 96, of Lake Odessa, formerly of Detroit, went to be with her Lord Friday, February 18, 2011 at Magnum Care in Hastings. She was born on December 23, 1914 in Detroit the daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Kuttney) Groth. She lived most of her life on the Eastside of the state, until 2005, when she moved to Lake Odessa. Following her move to Lake Odessa, Sylvia joined and was a faithful member of St. Edwards Catholic Church. She married John Welke on June 19, 1937 and raised three children together. Mr. Welke preceded her in death in 1976. Sylvia was a stay at home mom, raising her children and caring for her home. In her younger years she loved to play cards, her bowling league, her Christian Mothers Get-togethers, her love for crocheting and most of all when she could spend time with family and friends. We also can't forget Sylvia's enjoyment of scratching off lottery tickets, win or lose. She was preceded in death by husband John, parents, sisters, Grace Pallarito, Elsie Bowman, Ruth DeWitt and brother, Joseph Groth. Survived by 3 children, Ken Welke (Delores), Judy Lyson, John R. Welke (Dianna); 5 grandchildren; 9 grt-grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren, Beverly Coulter (Steve), Jeanette Westermann (Dave) and Alice Thornburg (Scott); 7 step grt-grandchildren; 13 step grt-grandchildren; sister, Angeline Rumps; brother, James Groth (Eleanor); numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family will be held from 12 – 4 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Koops Funeral Chapel – Lake Odessa. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Lake Odessa. Rite of Committal will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. Memorial contributions in Sylvia's name, in lieu of flowers, may be directed to St. Edwards Angel Ministries.
