Dorothy Lee Twigg Breese, 92, of Boynton Beach, entered her final resting place in Heaven on May 18, 2024 after a brief illness. Dorothy was born on September 15, 1931 in Cumberland, Maryland. She was the oldest of three children born to Edgar and Dorothy Twigg. The family moved to Fort Ashby, West Virginia in 1940 and she graduated from Fort Ashby High School, in 1949. After High School, Dorothy began Nurses Training at Memorial Hospital, the same hospital in which she was born. She graduated in 1952 and worked as a Registered Nurse at Memorial for the next five years.
Dorothy was introduced to the love of her life and future husband, Gerald W. Breese, by her younger brother Richard Twigg, whom he met at college. Dorothy and Gerald were married in Fort Ashby Methodist Church on August 26, 1956. The blissful couple moved to Florida in 1958, first to Pompano Beach, then to Lantana, where they raised their two sons, Eddie and Terry. Dorothy continued her nursing career at the newly opened Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach in 1959. Her Mother, also a Registered Nurse, began working alongside Dorothy shortly thereafter, becoming the first Mother/Daughter nursing team at the hospital.
Dorothy enjoyed traveling and she and Gerald visited nearly all of the states during Summer vacations over the years. She enjoyed the outdoors and camping, visiting many State and National parks. Dorothy and Gerald retired on the same day in 1988, and immediately set off on a three month trek across the country and Canada. After the passing of Gerald, Dorothy continued to travel with her sons, their wives and grandchildren, especially enjoying travels in Europe and Alaska.
Dorothy will be remembered as a kind, loving, caring individual and a wonderful Mother to Eddie and Terry. She loved her two boys and was present for all sporting and important events in their lives. She was known as “Sugarplum” to her four grandkids, Christopher, Jerry, Tyler and Kyle. They were the apple of her eye. She recently celebrated the birth of her first Great-Grandchild, Marshall, and was over-the-moon when she first held him.
Dorothy will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Eddie and Debbie Breese, and Terry and Cathy Breese, brothers Edgar (Sonny) Twigg and wife Donna, and Richard Twigg and wife Doris. Grandsons Christopher Breese and partner Julia Cherkis, Jerry Breese, Tyler Breese and Kyle Breese, Great-Grandson Marshall Breese, In-Laws Fred and Joan Ciannilli and Gerard and Alice Fernandez, numerous nieces and nephews, Church friends from Lakeside United Methodist Church in Lake Worth, and close friend and cousin-in-law Barbara Eleanor Kenney, who provided great friendship throughout her life and tremendous comfort during Dorothy’s final days.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life to be held at Dorsey - E. Earl Smith Funeral Home at 11am on Wednesday, May 22, 2024
