She was born on May 16, 1922, in Blountville, TN, on a feather bed in a one-room log cabin, the daughter of the late William and Pearl Crussel.
In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Moretz; her son, Jerry Booher; her daughters, Joan Moretz-Pera and Kathy Shiek; and her sisters, Faye Webb and Mary Barry.
She is survived by her sister, Juanita Harkleroad; her children, Beverly Moretz, Linda Alphin, Keith Moretz, and Jennie Pugh; and her extended family: Shirley Cross, Maxwell Moretz, Wanda Germain, Larry Moretz, Glenn Moretz, and Stanley Moretz; as well as being blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who will miss her dearly.
Hazel lived a life that was both extraordinary and deeply rooted in service. A master quilter, award-winning craftswoman, and skilled cook, she was as accomplished in her artistry as she was generous with her time. She single-handedly created hundreds of Christmas care boxes for families in need through her church, a testament to her tireless work ethic and giving spirit. Her fried chicken, pine needle baskets, blue ribbon–winning quilts, and sweet tea became treasured parts of family gatherings, each one infused with her warmth and skill.
Her life was a tapestry of quiet grace, steady devotion, and the kind of beauty that lingers long after the moment has passed. She showed us that true strength can be gentle, that service can be joy, and that love for faith and family can be the surest compass in life. We will carry her presence with us: in the warmth of a shared meal, in the work of our own hands, and in the knowledge that we were loved deeply and well.
