I just read about Pete's passing in the HP Newsletter.  I had just exchanged e-mails with him a few months ago and was deeply saddened by reading of this.  He will truly be missed.
While I only worked with him for a couple of years it is interesting that we grew up only a few blocks from each other in Orlando.  He is my age but we went to different schools so didn't know each other until we met at a course in Oak Ridge in the 80's.  Finally got to FPL in the early 90's and thats when I got to work with him.

I had the opportunity of working with Pete back in the 90's and he was great.

I have known PETE for at least 25 years;we worked together between Juno and the Turkey Point Nuclear Station. Throughout the years Pete always was a positive influence in the way he supported the station staff. When Pete was around Jim Bates,between the both of them the humor just flowed. Pete was always good for a good laugh and we had many. To be so close to retirement and have this happen is very sad. I will miss Pete I can only hope that now he is in a better place

Pete has been a dear friend since about 1975 when he came to work with the FL Dept of Health. He was so talented and intelligent and he taught me so much. I will miss him deeply. Jan and I wish to express our sincere sympathy to his family.

Pete is and has been my life time Colonial High School friend,then until now has remained true, sweet, helpful, honest and friendly to all who treated him with respect. This is a sad day for me but I ask Jesus to allow us all once again to meet. He always remembered Sanlando Springs Fl & wanted to revisit it once again....so this being private now I made this dream come true for him...so glad I did now. People come into our lives some for a reason, some for a season others for a lifetime.  Our paths crossed and we shared all three. I am so thankful for the friendship we shared. My God bless and rest your soul.

I knew and worked with Pete at FPL for some 25 plus years and my wife and I knew him socially outside of work for nearly as long. Pete was a respected and trusted co-worker and peer at FPL, and also someone my wife and I warmly considered to be a good friend. We will sincerely miss our colleague and friend. God Bless.

I have known Pete for over 20 years and during this time I have come to appreciate his humor, wit, and intellect.  Although I must admit at times I have had issues deciphering what he was trying to tell me, I knew that he was most likely right and that eventually I would figure out what he was saying.  God Bless you Pete Bailey, you are a good man and you will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to Pete's family.I first met Pete at a RETS-REMP Workshop prior to Point Beach being bought by FPL. Pete was an interesting person to know and to talk to.  He asked good questions which made you think outside the box.  He will be missed.

My Family and I send our deepest sympathy for the loss of Pete Bailey.  Our hearts and prayers go out to him, the family and all that knew and loved him.  A Mass will be held at St. Anna's Catholic Church in Monroe, Ga. on Sunday June 5, 2011 at 5:30pm in mention of his honor and his blessed memory.  We pray for his arrival with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It’s difficult to find the right words with which to remember Pete.  There are simply too many.He was among the most caring and loving of individuals I’ve ever had the pleasure of  knowing, with a heart big enough to hold everyone who touched his. Pete didn’t do anything half way.  He was a jack of all trades, a master of all.  Eternally giving of himself to those he knew, be it from lending a helping hand to emotional and motivational support.  He had shoulders large enough to comfort the world.  He was a lifter of souls.  His sense of silliness knew no limits, his capacity for caring no bounds. Pete was a friend of the first order, and I feel so very blessed to have counted him among mine.  My world changed for the better the day I first met you, Pete; and it will never be the same now that you’re gone.  Rest in peace, my friend.

While I did not know him as long as others, I always enjoyed and admired Pete’s unique balance of humor, science and business. As others have written, he will be missed tremendously but certainly not forgotten.  It is good that he is finally at peace.  I extend my deepest sympathies to his close friends and family.

Oh how we all will miss Pete.  I met Pete when I was a graduate student at the University of Florida in 1980 and we've been friends and collegues ever since.  He was a fine man, a great HP, a character and a true friend.  I will miss him dearly, as will all who knew him.  I will have a Black Russian in his honor this weekend.  He and I found out years ago that Black Russians, convertibles and car washes do not mix well.

Pete was a very brite cookie.  He could think fast on his feet and was always on the ball.  I had the honour of surving with him in both the REP and REMP for the Florida Department of Health 20 years.  I had already begun to miss him when I took my new position in Washington, DC with ORISE last year.  He was also a good friend and a good man.  I will miss him for a long time to come.  I wish all the best to his family and friends who I know will miss him too.  God Bless!

Pete you will truly be missed by those that got to know you and your sense of humor.I have never met anyone that could talk dose assessment quite like you (and you helped me understand some of it). God bless you and your family.

Pete will be greatly missed at FPL. He was a mainstain in the nuclear division and his worth was greater than most could understand. Pete had such a caring heart and he will continue to touch family and coworkers .

I thank Pete for all his knowledge and expertise in REMP issues.  He helped me in enumerable ways and was a remarkable colleague.  I will always remember the time at the RETS/REMP Workshop in Charlotte.  My wife and I really enjoyed our time with him walking around downtown Charlotte.

We have lost a dear friend and funny guy who had a great big heart.  Pete touched so many lives, and he is deeply missed.  I met Pete when he came to work at FPL/Corp. RP in the early 80's. Over all of these years, during his frequent visits to Turkey Point, he would always stop by my office to say hello, share a funny joke, and update me on his kids & life.  Of course, whenever the conversation would turn into a technical discussion about WBCs, TLDs, EPDs, PCEs, DRPs, EPZs etc. (Pete even found all of the acronyms funny), he would always find a way to mix in his unique quirky sense of humor.  I learned a lot from Pete.  He was one brilliant guy and a good friend.  It's hard to believe he is gone.  I will miss him very much.  My condolences to you Irena, and to the entire Bailey Family.

Our loss is certainly heaven's gain.  Pete was brilliant, funny, serious, not serious, pleasant, not unpleasant, etc... and could be all of these things in a single conversation, which could be lengthy.  He was one of those people that you meet in a lifetime and don't ever forget, if for no other reason because you never meet anyone else quite like him, and that is said as a high compliment.  I'm thankful for the oppertunity to have known him.  tx greg

Thank you for helping a newbie out when I first came to the Bureau of Radiation Control. Always looked forward to seeing you. Fair winds and following seas, you'll be missed but not forgotten.

I first met Pete when he hired on at the St. Lucie Plant way back in the 80's. It was fun from day 1!. Pete, I was never smart enough to understand everything you tried to teach me, but I always enjoyed seeing you around. Enjoy being St. Peter's HP Manager.

Pete was a co-worker and a friend.  Behind the quick wit was a very warm and caring person.  He can now rest peacefully and smile down upon the literally thousands of people he knew.

I worked with Pete for the past 7 years and enjoyed his sense of humor most of all.  He had a poster in his office that showed a picture of a girl scout standing in front of a burning house with the tag line that said "next time you'll buy the darn cookies!".  I think that just about says it all!  We miss you Pete!

Pete did much to mentor me upon arriving at FPL Turkey Point 2.5 years ago.  He was often going the extra mile to help me have a good product in reporting indicators,Scenario Development, and Drill execution.  His understanding of the Radiological "big picture"  made all those numbers seem simple.  He gave his best to this company and it's people everyday. 
More than any of this though I was priveleged to enjoy his friendship.  His personal side was deep, his heart was big.  I will take forward the wisdom he shared. I will treasure the personal moments we shared in between all the professional ones.  Rest now Pete, you've earned it.

You will truely be missed as both a friend and colleague. You can never be replaced because you were one of a kind!

Pete was a great mentor and was always a joy to speak with.  I can't believe he is gone so soon.  The world is a better place for Pete being in it.

I had the honor and pleasure of knowing Pete for 28 years.  He was certainly an "unforgettable character" to those who knew him.  We worked together often, we co-negotiated contracts often, we had manby sessions of deep discussion sitting by the pool in the evening during State REP Meetings.  Pete got me riled up a few times as well, but it was absolutely obvious, that he would do anything for a friend and had a heaqrt of gold.  I am thankful to have known Pete as a friend and will miss him greatly.

It is a true honor and privaledge to call Pete my friend.  You can travel to the end of the world and never find a bigger heart or carring friend.  Pete, you will be sadly missed and I am glad you are finally at peace.  I know we will never find a better friend and coworker.

Pete's a good guy...we'll miss him here at St. Lucie, he was allways willing to take the time to explain things to those of us not quite as smart as he was (which was most of us!) but always did it in such a way that we didn't notice! Vaya con Dios Peter.

Since the first time we met in the "stag line" at the Health Physics Society meeting, you have been like a brother to me. A big piece of my heart goes with you to heaven. I will buy the second round for you, Joel, and all the Oinkers. I may even throw in some wings; just stop hiding my shoes.

Pete was probably the person outside of my family that I was closest to in this life. I have no siblings, and often referred to him as 'my brotha'. I met him as I entered the profession of health physics as a graduate student, and he has been my closest friend ever since the first day I met him - when, as always, he cracked me up with his inane humor, word plays, and off the wall observations about life. Pete was my colleague and friend while we both worked for the State of Florida and at FPL. Pete had a keen sense of humor, was always there to assist in any project and was astutely gifted in his knowledge of health physics and emergency planning. Pete, you'll be missed, my friend. Pete, We had fun repairing Sirens and Air Sampler Stations. Every time we emailed or talked you always made my day. I believe they have Landcruisers in heaven and yours will be the biggest and baddest rig. Farwell my friend I will miss you and until we meet again.

We always knew when Pete came to our office because the everlasting Landcruiser was in the parking lot and doughnuts were in the conference room to take the sting out of an audit or budget meeting.  He was a stickler for having things done right.  I always enjoyed his jovial conversation during lunches with Dan Thoss or dinners with the Health Physics Society or power plant exercises.

Pete worked as a corporate health physicist for Florida Power and Light Company at the company headquarters in Juno.  Many of us knew him through direct interactions but almost all of us had indirect contact if we ever participated in a power plant drill at SL or TP.  We also fondly remember our pre exercise dinners at the Canton Restaurant in Miami.  He was our primary point of contact for the Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program, budget negotiation and issues and emergency response exercise planning and was one of the primary developers for the FPL dose assessment program.  While Pete worked for FPL nearly 30 years, he started in radiation protection with us, 
in 1975 as an OPS sample collection specialist.  While employed with the Office of Radiation Control, Pete passed the exams to become a certified health physicist, and went to work for FPL in Dec 1981.

Pete never forgot where he started in health physics and was always willing to assist with recommendations on programmatic and procedure improvements.  When I moved into the surveillance supervisor position in 1997, one of the first items on my list was to seek assistance from Pete on how we could make a better program for both the state and the utility.  For many years Pete has been the guiding light behind improvements in the environmental surveillance, particularly the TLD program. 
We will miss him both as a colleague and friend.

As anyone who spent any time with Pete knows, he was quite the character.  Maybe a touch sarcastic :-), but always willing to help.  We worked together  at drills and industry meetings over the years.  He will be missed.

Pete's knowledge, insights and humor will be sorely missed by all of us at the State Calibration Lab.

The Oinkers will miss you big-time...  Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up in Florida at the HPS meeting.  Looks like we'll have to wait until its my turn.  I'll buy the first beer.
