Darlene Moland passed away on Monday, December 6th at St. Anthony’s hospital in Lakewood at the age of 89, having recently observed her and husband Dave’s 65th wedding anniversary. She had been living quietly and happily at home with Dave in her later years, and her passing was relatively unexpected.
She is survived by her husband Dave and her sister Cheryl Smith (Lloyd) and many nieces and nephews. They had no children. She was preceded in death by her parents Herbert and Charlotte Geving and her three brothers: Herbert, Ronald and LeRoy.
Darlene was born in Spring Grove, MN and went to grade and high school in Parshall, ND where her family owned and operated a ranch and farm. She and Dave were married in Parshall in November 1956. She graduated from North Dakota State University (NDSU) at Fargo with a master’s degree in Home Economics and Education. She taught at high schools in ND and then joined the staff of NDSU’s Extension Service, traveling the state extensively, giving classes and demonstrations.
When she and Dave moved to Minneapolis with his engineering job, she taught at Augsburg College there. When they moved to Denver in 1970, she managed preschools in the Lakewood area and was very active at Lutheran Church of the Master (LCM), attending services, giving classes and supervising the youth in making caramel rolls for Easter breakfasts. She served as LCM council president and also served on the Building Committee during planning and building of the new church at its present location. She and Dave put together “Heritage Books” for both sides of her family and they also put together an illustrated cookbook called Favorites of Darlene, Family and Friends.
She approached her life and career with genuine commitment and enthusiasm. Her favorite hymn was Ode to Joy and her favorite popular song was Blue Skies by Irving Berlin, which she performed many times. She will be greatly missed by Dave, her family and her many friends.
Her Memorial Service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Master (LCM) on December 14th at 2:00 PM.
