Joan Carolyn Talvitie, 97, of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, passed away on March 13, 2026. She was born May 5, 1928, in Detroit, Michigan, to Paul and Elsie Kastenberg. Joan was an honest, independent, and frugal woman who loved to laugh, and she carried those qualities with quiet strength throughout her life.
Joan was an only child and spent summers in Northport, Michigan, where her allergies gave her less trouble. She graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit and earned her B.A. in Chemistry from Wayne State University.
In 1953, Joan moved to Denver, Colorado, with her fiancé, Gordon Talvitie after hearing about the mild winters here, compared to those in Detroit! Joan and Gordon lived in separate apartments in Denver until they returned briefly to Detroit to be married on December 28, 1954. Joan worked at Shell Oil in Downtown Denver until her children came along, after which she devoted herself to being a stay-at-home mother. In 1955, they had a house built in Wheat Ridge, where together they raised their children, Marcia and Mark.
Joan is preceded in death by her husband, Gordon (1999), and her parents. She is survived by her children, Marcia and Mark (Debbie); grandchildren, Matthew (Bernice), Gerrit (Elizabeth), and Jamison; great-grandchildren, John and Elena; nephew, Garth; and nieces, Karen and Susan.
In her fifties, Joan discovered the joy of walking, and maintained a remarkable routine — three miles every day except Sunday, when she would walk five miles! She kept this up from 1984 until about 2020, when she began walking just a couple of miles each day through her neighborhood. Occasional falls and trips to the ER (about which she did not always inform her family) didn't slow her down for long. In the past year, her walks became shorter still — up and down her street, in the yard, in her house, or on her treadmill. She also loved working New York Times crossword puzzles, even in her 90s, and she enjoyed watching old movies and sports, especially the Broncos.
Joan also gave generously of her time, volunteering at a local elementary school library while Marcia and Mark were students there, and serving for many years as a “Pink Lady” at Lutheran Hospital.
Fiercely independent, Joan insisted on living by herself in her home in Wheat Ridge up until her final day. She lived and slept in her mostly unfinished basement, where she was most comfortable, and continued to safely navigate the stairs daily. The day before her passing, she walked up the stairs, to the car, and into the hospital under her own power. She loved yard work and continued pulling and digging weeds through her last summer. True to her frugal nature, she preferred wearing old clothes and coats — many threadbare and decades old — and was sometimes approached on her walks by people wondering if she needed food!
Joan also had a deep passion for correct grammar and would lovingly correct family members whenever something was said or written incorrectly. One year, the family gave her a T-shirt that read, “I am silently correcting your grammar.” Except with family, her corrections were not always silent!
A Celebration of Life will be held on April 25, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Advantage Runyan-Stevenson Capitol, 6425 West Alameda Ave, Lakewood, CO 80226.
