Lou Etta Mortensen, 92, passed on due to complications arising from advanced age May 7, 2019 at her home in Westminster, Colorado. She left as she wished, in her own bed surrounded by loved ones, children and grandchildren. She is survived by Rolayne Martin, Roylon and (Esther Brown) Mortensen, Marlo and (Mitzi Grant) Mortensen, Duane Mortensen and (Tanya Bulson), Annette and (Phill Jenkins), Bonnie Mortensen, Sharon and (Matt Christensen), and including spouses, 64 other living descendants. Lou Etta was born March 19, 1927 to Mary Francetta Cook and Benjamin Franklin Sampson of Delta, Utah. After graduating from Delta High School, she enrolled in the University of Utah where she completed a degree in Home Economics. Returning to Delta, she taught home economics at the Delta High School and later in Parowan, Utah. There, involved in a church function as dance instructor, she met her dance partner and lifetime companion, Roy Lynn Mortensen. They were married July 8, 1950 in the St. George, Utah Temple. They moved to Bellingham, Washington, to pursue their dreams of raising a family and Lynn’s career as a professional in the Boy Scouts of America. Lynn’s career then took them to Helena, Montana and then on to Kansas City, Missouri. There, once her children were all in school, Lou Etta determined to make a better life for her family. Starting a home career as a professional seamstress, she made draperies for individual clients, as well as for commercial outlets. When that venture did not provide all she had hoped, she revived her career, teaching kindergarten in Kansas City, Missouri and later in Denver, Colorado, which she pursued until retirement. Lou Etta was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served her church in numerous capacities. She was a talented pianist, homemaker, seamstress, and interior decorator. She was a smiling face and guiding influence to her young kindergartners, a busy woman raising and instilling values within her family, and a spiritual strength to her church. Lou Etta was known for her gentle nature, her kindness, and endearing sense of humor. She will be greatly missed.
