Syria Celestina Montoya was born in Cleveland, New Mexico to Tomas and Matilde Bernal. When she was very young the family moved to Brighton, Colorado. She was a very beloved sister to nine siblings and daughter.
Syria was raised during the Great Depression where it was compulsitory for her to learned the value of hardwork, an excellent work ethic, and how to be loving and have a big heart while still being strong for your family and friends. She learned how to cook and be a jokster during her youth. All these things she carried through her life with her; she was always loving to her husband, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; she worried about her family and wanted their safety always; she loved joking with her family and making them laugh, and her day wouldn't be complete without her being in the kitchen.
Of course she loved some down time too, she loved novelas on the TV - especially Days of Our Lives. She loved Days of Our Lives so much that the grandchildren were told to take a nap at 2PM so that she could watch her stories. She loved to listen to Mexican music on Sundays, and she and her husband were heavily involved with the American Legion, where they would hold a dance for any occasion. Syria loved to dance.
Her family will miss her menudo, home made fresh tortillas, pasole, and other delicious foods she would make for them - her life wasn't complete if she wasn't making food. They will also miss her sense of humor, her love of Hallmark movies, where she and her great grandbabies would make jokes at the silly parts, and her devotion to her shrine of those gone before her, and all of the saints that would protect her dearly departed and her beautiful living family.
Syria passed away in her home in Brush, Colorado on February 14, 2023 at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents, 9 siblings, and her husband of almost 50 years, Jose. She is survived by her 4 children, many grandchildren, many great grandchildren, extended family and friends. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed.
A visitation for Syria will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a Recitation of the Rosary and Funeral Scripture at 12PM, both at Advantage Runyan Stevenson.
