I was a co worker of Bertha's at Gibbs &Cox in the 1980's . We shared a love of animals and I think she would appreciate what an extreme cat lover I have become. Rest in Peace 🕊️

I am heartbroken to learn of Bertha's passing. Bertha was a huge supporter of our efforts to save the SS United States, the historic ocean liner designed by my grandfather and his firm, Gibbs & Cox, where Bertha worked for almost 50 years. Because my grandfather died when I was only 5 years old, Bertha played a key role in bringing him to life during our many conversations. She painted such a vivid portrait of the firm's patriotism and productivity during WWII and beyond. The last time I visited Bertha (quite a few years ago) I believe she had a half dozen cats (or more?). They all had fabulous personalities, just like their owner.  I will be making donations in Bertha's name to the Associated Humane Societies and to the SS United States Conservancy, and I will be forever grateful for Bertha's friendship, support and zest for life.  She will continue to inspire us as we work to save the SS United States for future generations.  Fair winds and following seas, dear friend...   - Susan Gibbs 

Ms. Bertha Anderson lived a long and full life, but still the losing of her is very difficult to deal with.  May the love of friends and family help carry you through your grief.  Grief can be so hard, but your special memory helps you cope.  Remembering you and your loved one today and forever.

Bertha's friend Ruth Dausen relates that they met after Bertha moved to Toms River and the memory that comes to her mind is that Bertha, Ruth's sister-in-law Doris and herself always celebrated each other's birthday at the Olive Garden which they loved.

I first met Bertha volunteering at the Toms River Animal Shelter
as we were both dog walkers.  Anyone who truly knew Bertha knows that she loved animals since childhood.  She told me she graduated from Memorial HS in West New York in 1943 and started working at Gibbs and Cox in NYC that year where she worked for 48 years.  She also worked part time for Sterns Department Store.    She traveled extensively with her sister Florence and friends and on a visit to the Vatican saw the Pope.  We spent many holidays together the last several years, went out to lunch and to the annual firehouse chicken barbecue fundraiser and our conversations always included stories about our pets and animals.
