Carlos T. Romao, 93, passed peacefully on Thursday, March 24, 2022 into eternal rest with his family by his side. He is survived by his beloved wife Theresa of 72 years, his daughter Jo Ann Johnson, son-in-law Paul Johnson, his son Carl Romao his wife Susan Romao, his dear brother Joe Romao his wife Marion and his sister Odette Leques and her husband Neu. He is also survived by his grandchildren Brent Koenig, Ryan Koenig, Kaitlyn Johnson, Lauren Romao, Daniel Romao and his great grandchildren Kirby, Cooper and Zoe.
Carlos was born in Vale de Ilhavo Portugal and immigrated alone to the US on a freighter at the age of 16 in 1945 during the Second World War. He lived with his father in Newark, NJ until he met the love of his life Theresa. After their marriage he and his wife moved to Belleville, NJ where they lived for 64 years. In 2013 they moved to Toms River, NJ where he resided until his passing.
Carlos worked various jobs as a young man until landing at PSE&G where he was employed for 36 years. During his employment he rose through the ranks holding various positions. At the time of his retirement in 1991, he was a Senior Shift Supervisor at Hudson Generating Station in Jersey City, NJ. He worked very hard and instilled that work ethic to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.
He was an avid soccer fan and rarely missed a game on TV. He was a great cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family events and holidays and did so into his early 90’s. In addition, he loved spending time doing small projects and keeping busy helping others no matter what the task. He would help anyone and never ask a question. He also had a love for gardening and took great pride in his tomatoes .His greatest joy was being with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be on Thursday March 31, 2022 from 4pm – 8pm at D’Elia Funeral Home Route 70 & Vermont Ave, Lakewood, NJ 08701. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, April 1, 2022 at 10:30-11:30 in St. Luke Roman Catholic Church, 1674 Old Freehold Rd. Toms River, NJ 08755. An Interment will occur Friday, April 1, 2022 from 1:00 to 2:00pm at Holy Cross Cemetery, 340 Ridge Rd. North Arlington, NJ 07031.
In observance of the Catholic period of Lent, no flowers will be allowed in the Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association, heart.org or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
