Eugene J. Kerns Jr.

Eugene J. Kerns, Jr., age 87, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Leisure Park Assisted Living Community in Lakewood, NJ. Gene was born and raised in New York City on December 31, 1928. He was the son of the late Theresa and Eugene Kerns. After his early life in New York City, he later moved to Fairfield, CT where he raised his family. He was graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and attained his bachelor's degree from Iona College. Gene worked for 30 years with S.C. Johnson and Son as a household product salesman. Upon his retirement, he moved to the Original Leisure Village in Lakewood, and he enjoyed performing with the Village Players and the Village Airs. Gene was a communicant of the St. Mary of the Lake Parish. Brother of the late Patricia Kerns Mueller, he is survived by his children, Robert J. Kerns, Nancy Sobanik and her husband Bert, Linda Kellogg and her husband Terry; five grandchildren, Justin Cory, James and Katherine Sobanik, William and Richard Larter; and a nephew, Paul Mueller. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 7, 2016 at the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave., Lakewood, NJ 08701. His funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m.. Tuesday, November 8, 2016 in the St. Mary of the Lake Church, 43 Madison Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. Entombment will follow in the Mary Queen of Peace Mausoleum in the parish cemetery.
