

Harold W. “Mac” McElroy, age 79, of Lakewood, NJ passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ, after a long illness. Harold was born in Tarrytown, NY on July 14, 1934, and was the son of the late Julia and John McElroy. He graduated from Tarrytown’s Washington Irving High School in 1952. After being raised in Tarrytown, Harold was a resident of Cortlandt Manor, NY before relocating to Lakewood, NJ in 1998. Harold served in the US Army from 1957-1959 at Ft. Jackson, SC. He was a former employee of the New York Central Railroad and the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. Always passionate about US History and the railroad, Harold also enjoyed playing cards and reading. He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Mildred “Midge” (DeMichele) McElroy; a brother, John and his wife Patricia of Yorktown Heights, NY; a sister, Mary Theresa of Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister-in-law, Constance MacFadyen; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and a great-grandniece and a great-grandnephew. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the D’Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave., Lakewood, NJ 08701. His funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Friday in St. Dominic’s Church, 250 Old Squan Road, Brick, NJ 08724. Interment will be in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarrytown, NY.
