Justin was diagnosed with profound autism at an early age. Despite the challenges his disability created, Justin found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time with his family, making new friends, playing with his collection of musical toys, and adored a good cuddle. He never met a french fry that he did not like.
While Justin’s life was the spark for incredible advocacy and change, he will be most deeply remembered for the gentle, radiant soul he was and the unconditional love he gave so freely to everyone lucky enough to know him. Justin possessed a rare and beautiful ability to find magic in the simplest parts of life, moving through the world with a heart completely wide open. He was a young man of profound affection who understood better than anyone that a hug often says more than words ever could. He was a master of the good cuddle, and his presence brought a unique sense of peace to his home. He found endless delight in the rhythms and melodies of his musical toys, and his infectious sense of joy was never more apparent than when he was enjoying his beloved horseback riding lessons or rides at the boardwalk or Great Adventure.
Justin’s daily struggles and the support he required served as a catalyst for the creation of HomeLife 21, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring adults with profound autism and intellectual disabilities who require full-time care have access to a loving, supportive home that preserves joy, dignity, and community connection. His story has been shared before members of the House of Representatives, helping to inspire greater awareness and lasting progress. In this way, his life leaves an enduring mark of love, compassion, and positive change for generations to come.
Justin is survived by his devoted parents, Kimberlee Rutan McCafferty and Jeffrey McCafferty; his brother, Zachary McCafferty; his grandmothers, Susan Preston and Kate Williamson; his grandfather, Robert McCafferty; and a vast circle of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who loved him deeply. A celebration of life to honor Justin’s beautiful spirit will take place on May 23rd, 2026, at 10AM at the Colts Neck Reformed Church located at 139 County Rd 537, Colts Neck, NJ 07722.
