Marta Shevchuk, age 65, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at the Ocean Medical Center in Brick, NJ. Born on March 15, 1951 in Shamokin, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Stephania Hawryluk.
Marta was raised in Buffalo, NY, and settled in Old Bridge, NJ after marrying her husband. While being primarily a caretaker of her children, she taught part-time for many years at Assumption Catholic School in Perth Amboy, NJ, and later at Sacred Heart School in South Amboy.
Marta was passionate about her children and grandchildren. She also applied some of her passion to baking, singing in church and community choirs, numerous volunteer activities, and more recently to her card-making crafts, donating her beautiful creations to various charitable organizations for their use. Her relaxation was jigsaw puzzles, the bigger the better. Traveling to admire the variety of God’s creations was something she especially loved to do, and enjoyed more of such opportunities after her husband’s retirement.
Sister of Joseph, Ulana, and the late Diana, she is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, George; 2 children, Eugene Shevchuk and Natalie Paulie; son-in-law Michael Paulie, and grandchildren Charlotte and George.
Visitation will be from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave. Lakewood, NJ 08701. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at St. Stephen Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1344 White Oak Bottom Rd., Toms River, NJ 08755. Interment will be in the Holy Spirit Cemetery, Campbell Hall, NY.
In lieu of flowers please consider donations to the Ukrainian Catholic Education Fund, St. Stephen Church (Toms River), or Mary’s Place by the Sea (Ocean Grove, NJ).
