
Thomas Gallagher, age 81, of Lakewood, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at the New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, NY. Born on April 3, 1934 in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Winnie (Henry) and Thomas Gallagher. He attended Cardinal Hayes High School. He lived in Nanuet, NY from 1967 to 2002, and during that time spent winters in Boynton Beach, FL. He relocated to the Fairways section of Lakewood, NJ in 2001. Thomas was a USAF veteran of the Korean War. He later attended City College-John Jay College on the G.I. Bill and earned his Master's Degree. Thomas joined the New York City Police Department in 1957 and served until his retirement in 1994 as the Assistant Chief. He had commanded the three patrol boroughs of Brooklyn North, Brooklyn South and the Bronx. He was a member of the American Legion, the AM Vets, and The Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Thomas enjoyed reading, traveling, playing golf, and visiting Atlantic City, NJ.
Son of the late Winnie Henry and Thomas Gallagher; brother of the late, Mary, Eileen, Ronnie, and Kay; husband of the late, Ruth O'Reilly Gallahger, Maureen Doyle Gallagher, and Nancy Moran Gallagher; he is survived by his brother Neil; a daughter, Cathy Gallagher; 2 sons, Thomas and Daniel Gallagher; a Step-daughter, Christine Tierney Zinna; and his grandchildren, Thomas, George, Kaelen, Meghan, Liam and Alannah; his step grandchildren, Katie, Timothy and Thomas Zinna.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 12, 2015 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, NJ 08701. A second visitation will be on Sunday, December 13, 2015 from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wyman Fisher Funeral Home, 100 Franklin Avenue, Pearl River, NY 10965. His funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday in the Church of St. Anthony, 36 W Nyack Road, Nanuet, NY 10954. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
