

Ret. CSM. William “Bill” E. Smithers, 82, passed away April 24, 2015 at his home in Lakewood. Mr. Smithers was born and raised in Virginia before joining the US Army, serving over 20 years at numerous bases. During his service he traveled to many places with his family and finally retiring as a CSM. and settling in Lakewood, NJ for the past 46 years. While in the Army he earned the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Bill and his wife Eva were the owners/operators of the Whispering Pine Residential Healthcare Facility in Lakewood for 31 years. He served as the past president of the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club of Lakewood and the NAACP. William also served as the past chairman of the Planning Board of Lakewood, Board of Trustees for Kimbal Medical Center, Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts of America, Trustee of the Macedonia Baptist Church, Teacher of Bible Study at Albert C. Clayton Senior Housing and the Board of Education in Lakewood. Some of Bill’s hobbies and interests included golfing, gardening, Tae Bo, Jogging, exercise, playing the piano and guitar, singing and most importantly spending time with his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be greatly missed by all. Mr. Smithers is predeceased by his grandson, Jonathan William Smithers Dunnemann, sister, Sylvia Jones and parents, William Smithers and Ann Maria Petross. Bill is survived by his wife of 62 years Eva, children, Ivy Holsey Esq.and her husband Ronald, Dr. Wilda Smithers Dunnemann and her husband Jon, and Julie Best and her husband Marshall, grandchildren, Ronald, Jessica, Michael, Daniel, and Marshall, sister Margaret Williams and her husband Claude and many other relatives and friends. Arrangements are under the direction of the D’Elia Funeral Home 1300 Vermont Ave. Lakewood, NJ 08701. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 1, 2015 from9:30- 10:30am at Cathedral of the Air of the Lakehurst Naval Base. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 11AM at the Cathedral of the Air of the Lakehurst Naval Base. Entombment will take place at Ocean County Memorial Park, in Toms River. In lieu of flowers please make donations in Bill’s memory to the Centra State Healthcare Foundation 916 Route 33, Suite 6 Freehold, NJ 07728, designated to Cancer.
