Birth, Education and Career
On January 26, 1941, God blessed Emory and Emma Ellis with their first of two baby girls, who they named Edwina in honor of her paternal grandfather Ed Ellis. Born in Ferriday, Louisiana, Edwina was raised in Orange and Galveston Texas, receiving her elementary and secondary educations through the Catholic and public schools in Orange and Galveston, graduating as a Mighty Bearcat from the Galveston Central High School in 1958. Influenced in part by her parents' and grandparents' Arkansas roots, she attended Historically Black Philander Smith College in Little Rock as a Secretarial Science major. Returning to Galveston Island after college, Edwina began a 30 plus year career with the Galveston Independent School District as a secretary and administrative professional at Central High School, Goliad Elementary, Central High School and Stephen F. Austin Intermediate School, retiring in July 1994. She later worked as a tax preparer with H& R Block in LaMarque, Texas for 23 years.
Spiritual and Professional Affiliations
Edwina accepted Jesus Christ as her lord and savior at an early age and was added to the Church of Christ at Avenue Kin Galveston and later affiliated with the Westward Street Church of Christ, where she remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home. She served as a bible teacher, worked with the ladies bible classes and sang alto with the James, Dunlap & Spencer Trio and other church song groups. Her professional memberships included: Galveston Support Personnel, Texas State Teachers Association, and American Business Women's Association.
