John Edward “Ed” Britton was born March 10, 1950 to Savada Holloway Britton and Andrew Phillip Britton, Sr. in Galveston, Texas.
To his family and friends, he was known as Ed. He grew up in West Texas City in the portion historically known as the 1867 Settlement. He was one of the surviving grandchildren of early settlers Pearl Hobgood Britton and Thomas Henry Britton.
Ed was baptized at an early age while attending Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City, Texas. He attended the public schools of La Marque ISD and was a proud graduate of La Marque High School in 1969, which he immediately went to work at the refineries and later in life worked in security at Walmart.
In 1976, he married the love of his life Janice Kimble, to their union one child was born Joyce Edwina Britton, a beautiful baby girl full of joy. Ed was faithful to their union until her untimely death.
While attending Barbour’s Chapel Baptist Church in Texas City, Texas, Ed meet his calling in the ministry. Ed was very faithful to his calling and belief. Ed was a quiet person and very steady in studying the Bible while maintaining a strong connection with God. Ed was a dedicated member of Willing Workers Baptist Church until his health failed, but he faithfully supported the church to the end.
The Reverend John Edward Britton was preceded in death by his parents, Savada and Andrew Phillip Britton Sr.; his wife, Janice Kimble Britton; three sisters, Savada Stevenson, Martha Ballard Lee and Thelma Britton Wyatt; three brothers, Elmo Stevenson, Robert Stevenson and Andrew Phillip Britton, Jr.
There is no greater love than a devoted caring sister who was always with him their whole lives; Sherilyn "Bemp" Britton Collins has made sure her brother was cared for to the end and only death could separate their connection.
Ed is survived by a lovely daughter and only child, Joyce Edwina Britton; sisters, Sherilyn Britton Collins (Hosea) and Mary Ballard Hudson; nieces, Patricia Wyatt Cotton, Christian C. Douglas (Charles), Roletha Jones, Betty Jean Britton Byrd, Bobby Jean Britton Jones, Savada Howard, and Patricia Stevenson; nephews, Rev. Gregory O. Wyatt, Rev. Michael W. Wyatt, Grayline K. Wyatt, Jerry Wyatt, Lloyd Bivens, Andre Shanks, Robert Stevenson, Jr. and Kevin Stevenson; a host of other relatives and friends.
