

Robert "Sam" Williams Jr. was born on December 20, 1921 in Galveston, Texas to Robert L Williams Sr. and Inez Taylor. Robert accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City, Texas under the leadership of the late Rev. M. S. Simmons. He graduated from Central High School in Galveston, Texas, and immediately thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Navy. In 1943 he received an Honorable Discharge. Robert attended Hampton University in Virginia, where he majored in Marine Electronics. He was an independent contractor, homebuilder and carpenter. Robert retired from the United States Post Office after over 20 years of service and was the first African American Postal Clerk in Galveston County. He was a very faithful and devoted life-time church member at Rising Star. During his membership, he served in many capacities in the church. He was a member of the Brotherhood, Sunday school, Usher Board No. 1 and served as the Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School. He was a member of the Galveston County Community Action Board, 1st Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of the African American Historical Preservation Committee, Cub and Boy Scout Master; a 60+ year member of La Marque Masonic Lodge #373 F&AM Prince Hall Affiliation; member of Winn Consistory #234 33rd Degree Mason and member and Past Potentate of El Katif Temple #85 A.E.O.M.S. He was a judge for Precinct 36 for many years and past president of the National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees. Robert was instrumental in writing and receiving a grant for the purpose of restoring the old Phillips Cemetery in Texas City; which has been designated a historical site in the African American Community. On Wednesday, October 28th, 2015, he answered the Master's call at Mainland Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Robert L Williams Sr. and Inez Taylor; Wife Bessie Scott Williams; two Daughters, Carolyn "Sue" Adkins and Teresa "Tip "Francis; two sisters, Norine Williams and Minnie Lee McWilliams; grandson, Stevie Williams; and granddaughter, Homozelle "Pee Wee" Adkins. He leaves to cherish his memories his three Daughters, Shirley Reason, Jacquelyn Mitchell and Linda McKenzie (Thearthur); two Sons, Michael Davis and Ronald Wilson; grandchildren, Dwain Williams, Joseph Francis Jr., Allisa Frances Butler (Warren), Tanja Reason, Samuel M. Reason (Monique), Sherri Fielder, Timothy McKenzie (Lynette), Karen McKenzie Collins, Michael Davis Jr. (Freda), Montrice James (Byron) and Andre Davis; 22 great-grandchildren; Godchild, Monica Jenkins Jones; sister-in-law, Doris Jones; brother-in-law, Floyd Scott Sr.; great-nephew, Charles Deshan Scott; Longtime Friend, Johnnie Miller of San Antonio, Texas; and a host of beloved relatives and friends.
