

Sister Virginia Ann Hagans Houston, 92, of Hitchcock, Texas was born on July 8, 1919 in Lake Providence, Louisiana to the family of the Late Louis Hagans and the Late Sarah McGraw. She answered the call of the Heavenly Father in peace and comfort on April 22, 2012 at Ashton Parke Care Center in La Marque, Texas. She spent her early years with her grandparents, Jim and Caroline McGraw in the farming community of Concordia Parish, Louisiana. She accepted Christ early and was baptized on June 4, 1930 as a member of St. James Baptist Church in Frogmore, Louisiana. She later met and was united in Holy Matrimony to her beloved husband, the Late Deacon Telf Houston on June 9, 1947, in Vidalia, Louisiana. In the early 1950s, Virginia and Telf moved to Galveston, Texas where she attended Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church. They later built a home in Hitchcock, Texas, where they became long time residents and members of the community. Virginia and Telf joined Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church in the early 1960s under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Wilbur Johnson and were among the earliest and most devoted members of the Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church having served the church in its formative years wherever the need arose. She also served faithfully as a Deaconess of the Church; on the Usher Board for many years; member of the Mission and the choir. She has been a member of Greater St. Matthews Baptist Church for over 48 years. She was also a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. Virginia Ann Hagans Houston will be remembered as a follower of Christ, an active supporter of her church and a devoted wife, mother, sister and aunt. She was a woman of kindness but also of conviction. She leaves to cherish her memory: a daughter, Stella Rivers of Texas City; a son, Joseph Houston of Hitchcock; a sister, Louise Hagans of New Orleans, Louisiana; a brother, Robert Hagans of St. Albans, New York; 12 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Janie Houston of Hitchcock; niece, Eleanor (Kenneth) Peters of Friendswood; two nephews, Dr. John Houston of Chicago, Illinois and Fread Houston of Austin, Texas; a goddaughter, Linda Tyson Reeves; devoted friends, Maggie O. Jones and Mattie Glenn; cousins; nieces; nephews and many other loving and devoted family and friends.
