Charles Oliver Hintz, "Chuck," 69 years old, left this world unexpectedly on June 9, 2016. He
was a lifelong resident of Berne Township, born of the dirt, made of the dirt, one with the dirt. A
simple upbringing, he was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Lucille (Derflinger)
Hintz. Raised with six siblings—Marjorie, Nora, Mark, Laura, Ray, and Lou—and a oneness
with nature unknown to most, he aspired for more. We will miss hearing the stories of his 18
years spent as a millwright-welder at Anchor-Hocking—where he made many lifelong
friendships.
He is survived by the love of his life, Sandy. They were married for 41 glorious years. He
carried a picture of her from their wedding day in his wallet for their entire marriage and shared
his love for her with everyone he met. He loved her with every ounce of his being.
Also survived by his children and their spouses, Melissa & Daniel, Todd & Kelsey, Brian & Pam
and Shelly & Jerry, for whom he always dreamed of nothing but happiness. Our Chuck
moments will be remembered forever. His gaggle of grandchildren kept a genuine smile on his
face. Zoe, Sara, Amelia, Megan, Ava Grace, Abigail, Weston and Samantha, your Grandpa
Chuck will forever live in this world around you. Remember to feel him in the wind, see him in
the trees, and smile when the birds are chirping for the remainder of your lives. He is also
survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy & Marjie, Darlene and Mary Elizabeth & Randy,
and a plethora of nieces and nephews who likely have a myriad of stories of their Uncle Chuck.
Chuck's education included a Master's in the Great Outdoors and a PhD in Porch Swinging. His
knowledge of trees, his acute awareness of the world around him, his love of his front porch will
all be missed so dearly.
His garden was his therapy from Spring until frost. His thumbs were green, plants his friends.
His sister Laura, best friend and partner-in-crime, will be tasked with bringing her green thumbs
to help us make it grow. Chuck never met a stranger and he is survived by his amazing friends,
a beautiful loving family and a community where he was at home. A special friendship with his
best pal, Gary Blank, was a sustaining part of his life.
Chuck loved this life with fierceness and he would want each of us to continue his legacy, so sit
on your porch, hug your family, take a walk in the woods, go outside to tend your garden.
Calling hours will be from 2:00-4:00pm and from 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, June 14, at
Halteman-Fett & Dyer Funeral home. A graveside memorial will be held at Forest Rose
Cemetery, Wednesday, June 15 at 10:30am. Those wishing to attend should meet at Halteman-
Fett & Dyer Funeral home at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in
Chuck's name to Lutheran Social Services, St. Peter's Lutheran Church, or the Arbor Day
Foundation.
