
Richard Fitzgerald Cagney of Lancaster, Ohio, passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026, at age 79 after a lengthy illness. The second of six children, Richard, was born on September 19,1946 in Boston, Massachusetts. His early years were spent in Boston, Hartford, Connecticut, and Somerville, NJ. He eventually settled in Lancaster with Alice, his wife of 48 years. Richard attended The Ohio State University followed by a career at Kroger where he retired after 30 years of service.
Richard enjoyed politics at all levels and even served a term on Lancaster City Council. Additionally, he served for many years as UFCW Shop Steward. Richard was also an avid sports fan, especially for his hometown Boston Red Sox and his much-beloved Ohio State Buckeye Football Team. He also loved travel, reading, history, vegetable gardening, and antiquing.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Edward John and Mary Lauer Cagney, his brother Edward John Cagney Jr., sister Jeanne Marie Cagney and Brother-In-law John Misistigh He is survived by wife Alice, daughter Amy Daren Springer, sister Mary Ellen Misitigh, sister Maura Leus and her husband Steve, brother Philip Cagney and his wife Sharon as well as several nieces and nephews.
Per Richard’s request, Dignity Cremation is to take place through the HALTEMAN-FETT & DYER FUNERAL HOME. A Celebration of Richard’s life will take place in the spring.
