Richard, known to many as “Dick”, retired from Anchor Hocking. Dick was also a groundskeeper at the Lancaster Country Club for ten years. He took great pride in his work and especially loved mowing; something he found both purpose and peace in.
Dick proudly served in the United States Navy for two years after graduating from Pleasantville High School in 1951. He was the last surviving member of his graduating class.
Despite working swing shift throughout much of his career, Dick never missed an opportunity to support his children. He made it a priority to attend all of their sporting events, a true testament to the devoted family he was.
Following the loss of his son Brett, who was killed in the line of duty, Dick developed a deep and lasting commitment to supporting law enforcement. Together with his wife, Carol, he helped establish the Officer Brett Markwood Scholarship in Brett’s memory. Dick continued to be actively engaged in law enforcement events and initiatives as a way of honoring his son’s legacy.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Carol Markwood; his sister, Judy Farley; children, Bob Markwood (Trenia Kent), Beth (Chuck) Meyer, and daughter-in-law, Maureen (Jay) Markwood; his grandchildren, Justin (Jessica) Markwood, Heath (Karli) Meyer, Paige Markwood, Corbin (Kelleigh Pier) Markwood, Analise Markwood Schumacher, and Andrew Markwood Schumacher; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Rylee Meyer and Brody Meyer.
Dick was preceded in death by his siblings, Mary Jo Markwood-Kauffman, Bob Markwood, Joyce McCartney, and Mike Markwood; as well as his beloved son, Brett D. Markwood.
No calling hours will be observed at this time. Dignity Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be made to the Fairfield County Foundation Officer Brett Markwood Scholarship.
