Agnes Cunningham Crichton of Surrey, B.C. passed away peacefully in Kinsmen Lodge Retirement Home after long illness at age 93 on April 3rd, 2024. She was born in Dalmarnock (Glasgow), Scotland on September 21st, 1930, to Alexander Cunningham Gilchrist and Emily Court Gilchrist where the family resided.
Agnes an only child and was predeceased by her parents Alexander and Emily Gilchrist with her husband Thomas MacDonald Crichton passing away in December 2023. She leaves behind her son Lawson Gilchrist Crichton and was predeceased by her daughter Ainsley Crichton. Also, close family are her nephew Alan Miller his wife Gillian and their two children Ian and Sally Miller.
Being evacuated from Glasgow during the Second World War Agnes completed her schooling at Torrance House School in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire and went on to graduate from The Pittman Secretarial College in Glasgow. Taking up a career as a legal secretary after college she remained in Glasgow until changing careers to be an Air Stewardess for KLM Airlines in Manchester for 2 years prior to moving back to Glasgow.
Meeting Thomas MacDonald Crichton they married on June 15th,1956 and started a family home in Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire. Agnes gave up her career to raise her two children in the family home before the young family moved to Parbold, Lancashire due to a career move by Thomas Crichton. After relocating to Parbold Agnes became active in the local branch of the Women’s Institute and participated in many social events and organized the annual village fete in Parbold – winning first prize multiple years for jam making. During this time in Lancashire and while living at “Huntscliffe Manor” - Agnes renewed her love for animals and horses as her daughter was encouraged to be an avid rider participating in many local equestrian events. Agnes fostered many dogs and cats from the local RSPCA branch and supported their efforts in fund raising whilst also starting and running a kindergarten as a home-based business.
A further career change for Thomas moved the family to Meriden, West Midlands where upon their children were grown to the point where Agnes resumed her career as a secretary/ personal assistant to the Chief Engineer of Land Rover Cars in Solihull. Agnes enjoyed her active role in Land Rover Cars and participated in the team which brought the Range Rover to the market.
Upon Thomas’s retirement in 1988 the couple moved to Wigtownshire in Scotland where she continued to be an active member of the community and volunteered with local charities to help children and the elderly. Agnes and Thomas manage to travel extensively during their marriage and visited many parts of the World and particularly enjoyed their retirement cruise around the Atlantic and Caribbean on the Cunard - QE2.
In 2006 at age 76 - Agnes was instrumental in the decision for her and Thomas to move to the West Coast of Canada to be closer to their son Lawson and settled in Langley, B.C. where she quickly made new friends at the Chartwell Green Community where they bought a house.
After a severe fall in the house and due to failing health/ cognitive problems Agnes took up residence in Whitecliff Care Home located in South Surrey in November 2021 where she recovered and became actively involved with the care home social events and friends. December 2023 facilitated a move to Kinsmen Lodge for the specialist care Agnes now required for her failing health.
The family would like to express their gratitude to all the care givers at Kinsmen Lodge who made Agnes’s last weeks and days peaceful and filled with dignity with the level of care the team provided.
