Barbara was born Barbara Joanne Winfield to Don and Betty Winfield on January 15, 1953 in Toronto, Ontario where her father was serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Soon after they moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where her sister Sandra was born. The Winfield's headed to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and lived for brief period in Calgary, Alberta. The family eventually established a home base in Dauphin, Manitoba - a stone's throw from the villages of Grandview and Gilbert Plains where Don and Betty were born and raised. As a result Barbara spent a happy childhood in Dauphin amongst a cast of cousins and close, life-long friends.
While attending Dauphin's junior high school Barbara met her future husband Dennis Bassett, who lived in Gilbert Plains. Barb and Dennis were married in Dauphin in April 1971. The newlyweds initially lived on the original Bassett homestead south of Gilbert Plains. They eventually settled in Dauphin soon after Dean's arrival. Dauphin's hospital also welcomed Kevin and Jamie into the world.
In 1979 the family of five moved about 90 miles west to Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Barbara made many more close friends in that fantastic Parkland community, all the while still maintaining close ties to her roots in Dauphin. She was a constant presence at local hockey rinks and school gymnasiums watching her three boys develop both socially and athletically in her new hometown. Save the shedding fur Barbara grew to love the final addition to the family in 1988, a German Shepherd pup named Lady.
In 1991 as hard as it was to leave friends, family and the prairie lifestyle behind, Barbara with her own family now ventured west once again traversing the Rockies this time heading to the West Coast and settled in Langley, British Columbia. Barbara embraced the West Coast lifestyle. The mild weather combined with the new metropolitan surroundings allowed Barbara to enjoy and experience life in a slightly different way. However different the environment may have been, her kind and generous nature never altered still allowing her to cultivate many new friendships in her new community.
Barbara enjoyed the hustle and bustle of this region in Canada. Going "across the border" into Washington State never failed to excite her bargain hunting spirit. She also enjoyed concerts, sporting events and cultural festivities that Vancouver offered. On one of her outings in downtown Vancouver Barbara and a friend found themselves taking an elevator with John Travolta - a story that she never got tired of telling.
In keeping with her penchant to move across Canada, Barbara enjoyed traveling. She felt the warm waters on her toes stretching from the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Hawaiian Islands and a terrific trip down-under to Australia. Her foot touched the ground in most of the western states in the Continental US. One epic summer family vacation (that included two other families) drove through the following states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California - it's still a blur as to how the family made the jump from California to Montana. Pit stops included Denver, the Grand Canyon, and Disneyland. Beautiful British Columbia also provided many summers RV'ing in the sunny Okanagan. Some of Barbara's other traveling joys were trips to northern California to visit her sister Sandy, who lives in a town outside of lovely Sacramento California.
Barbara will be sadly missed by all those who have been fortunate to have had a relationship with her. Barbara was all things a loyal daughter, a dedicated sister, a helpful friend, a caring aunt, a generous grandmother, a loving wife and selfless mother. She was considerate of others even in times when she needed the helping hand. Barbara's journey, although cut short, was full of life, love and happiness and will end where her goodness was born, along side her mother and father. She was just a wonderful women. Rest In Peace Barbara we are all better for knowing you.....we all love you.
