It is with profound sadness the family of Clara Chew announce her passing at the age of ninety-six. Clara passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024, at Langley Hospice Residence with her children at her side.
Clara was born at the Vancouver General Hospital to Jane Chan (née Lawson) and George Chan.
In her youth, Clara worked at a produce store where her future husband, James was co-owner. After marrying the love of her life, her children soon followed. She followed James with children in tow, to Squamish, BC and Calgary, Alberta.
She was a mother first and a bookkeeper later for several companies in Calgary and Vancouver.
In her retirement Clara loved dancing, cruising and travelled extensively with her husband and her brothers and sisters, enjoying the many shopping opportunities wherever they went. The staff and residents at the Chartwell Renaissance retirement home will remember her best for her cheerful attitude and quick smile.
Clara is survived by her five children: Sandra (David), Stephen (Marianna), Karen (Ian), Kathryn (Eric) and Keith (Kim); nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters: Bertha, June, Georgina, Florence, and brothers: Don and Gerry, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband James, sister Isabel and brother Wallace.
The family would like to thank all of the residents and staff at the Chartwell Renaissance for their kindness and friendship while Clara was in residence and the staff in the Acute Care Unit at the Langley Memorial Hospital and the Langley Hospice Residence for their heartfelt compassion, kindness and professionalism in caring for Clara in her final days.
At Clara’s request, there will be no public service, her immediate family will be remembering her in a private service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Clara Chew would be appreciated and can be made to the Langley Hospice Society,
