Stu came to Chalmers as a vice principal, but he was much more. You could see him getting tough with a student yet spending time after school with them, or caring for the less fortunate. I also heard he blew up a  classroom with some sort of concoction.  He also made his whole classroom into a pinhole camera so the whole school could see how a camera works. It was part of the curriculum, but I don’t think it was meant to be at this scale. The unconventional Stu! 

Outside school Stu had a passion when it came to hobbies. He loved birds! Dennis, a former colleague, recalls Stu taking him everywhere in New Orleans to hunt for certain birds. The passion continued until the end. There were many bird houses for Starlings. He always made sure each bird house had enough food. There were a lot of bird houses he had to feed. Busy was always Stu’s  way of life even in his late 80s.
 

If you were fortunate enough to be one on one with Stu you would either get a joke or a story or both. Like a little boy, once he finished his joke, he had this little impish smile on his face. He used to tell the dirty jokes to the primary teachers just to shock them. He had his way about delivering the joke that didn’t make it offensive. Stu’s stories were always interesting and left you wanting more.

In Stu’s last few years of his life, he became very transparent. He would cry whenever we  would talk about our past journeys or life. You could see how all the experiences he had at Chalmers affected his being. He was definitely a different person then in his 90s. So wonderful to see and to experience. Birdman had to be one of-natures treasures.

I could sum up Stu‘s life as refreshing. He followed his own current of life and not what society dictated. Priceless! When Stu found his safe home at Chalmers he could be true to himself, knowing he would be accepted  for who he was as a person. This relationship carried on until Stu passed. God bless you Stu. Dear Tia and Andrena;  I was deeply saddened to read of your father's passing.  He was such a good man!  We met through our mutual friend Bob Bowen and have kept in touch all these years - mostly at Christmastime.  I still have all his Christmas letters!
I wish I had known he was living in Maple Ridge - I would have visited. I'm in Walnut Grove, as I think you are Tia.  I babysat you when you were just a wee girl.  I knew your lovely mother.
My sincerest condolences to you all - and yes, I'm sure he is busy helping someone with a carpentry job somewhere!  Or writing beautiful letters.....God bless you Stu - rest well. xo

My dear friend, it was time for you to take your leave from this life.
Your 95 years took many twists and turns,  ever with a laugh in the retelling. 
You added your knowledge and personality to our weekly Naturalist club birding mornings.  A highlight for me was the annual Christmas count days with Don and Dave.  
A life well lived.

I am so sorry to learn of Stu's passing, and mourn his loss. Stu was a much-loved member of our birding group here in Kelowna with the Central Okanagan Naturalists' Club. We all missed him when he moved to Langley last year to be closer to family. Stu had a fund of delightful reminiscences which he shared freely. How many times we loved hearing something that began, for example, "On June 4th, 1952, I ....." and he would be off, remembering an outing with school children, teaching them backwoods skills or life skills, or telling anecdotes about his many friends near and far, and always with that delightful twinkle in his eye. Every year on my birthday Stu would phone me to wish me well. How I will miss that! I remember with fondness many birding outings near and far, enlivened by his presence and enriched by his happy chat. Trying to find his hearing aid on a hillside near Vaseux Lake, when he dropped it to change the battery was a tense moment but it ended well. Stu was a presence, always in the moment, always kind, always valued, always cherished. We will all miss him but I am sure we will all remember him with great affection. I send my sincere sympathy to the family and to other friends who mourn his loss.

Stu was much loved and respected by colleagues at Chalmers Elementary School in North Delta. Post retirement he ensured ongoing relationships with former peers were much appreciated. His curiosity and loyalty will be missed.
