Manfred was born June 19, 1944, in Dolgen, Germany, the son of the late John and Karoline Reichert.
Manfred worked as a career Logistics Manager in the freight and shipping industry. He worked for Emery Air Freight, CP Transport, and most recently Overland Trucking in Surrey from which he retired twenty years ago. He loved to chat about anything and everything related to the shipping industry and retold many stories about the challenges, hazards and rewards of working at his job.
After retirement, Manfred informally stayed involved in the shipping business, with a backyard Pallet re-conditioning operation with his brother, Dietrich. Affectionately we called them the “Pallet Brothers”. They spent many hours sourcing free, damaged pallets and repaired them and/or created custom sizes for anyone who would buy them. Many a shipment was made with pallets crammed in the back of his Ford Escort, or more recently, his Ford Ranger. Part of his backyard endeavors included taking care of local flora and fauna like his budding oak trees (and saving their acorns) and the neighborhood squirrels, namely El Gordo and Half Pint, who were treated to gingersnap cookies each day.
Manfred especially loved collecting stamps, coins, and hockey cards. He had extensive collections. He loved watching sports on TV and was an avid Canucks fan and Kansas City Chiefs fan. He was very well read and enjoyed reading the Newspaper every day.
Although Manfred did not belong to a local church, he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and had fond memories of attending Immanuel Lutheran Church in Aldergrove, BC with his parents.
Remaining to cherish Manfred’s memory are sister Helene Mayfield, brother Dietrich Reichert, niece Kerry Baird (husband Ian, children Sadie and Libby) and niece Leanne Korving (husband Ben, children Emily and Aidan).
Preceding Manfred in death are parents John and Karoline Reichert.
A funeral is scheduled for January 24th at a location to be determined with a graveside service to follow for family only.
Condolences can be sent by clicking on the link Show Your Support at the bottom of this page.
The family would like to thank Amenida Senior’s Community in Surrey for their exceptional level of care and for making him feel comfortable and welcome. Although he had lived there for only 8 months, he found a sense of community and spoke fondly of the staff there.
May Manfred rest in peace as he prepares to join his Heavenly Father.
