Del graduated from Ingham Township Agricultural School in 1944 after which he enlisted in the Army and served as a squad leader in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war ended he returned home and married Mary Emma (Bishop) McCann. Together they raised 3 children in Lansing, Michigan. He had a huge interest in flying after the war and learned how to fly a small engine plane. He wanted to continue flying and even fly commercially but the funding from GI bill ran out. He told of a few hair raising “stunts” he pulled while flying. Del had an amazing memory, especially of numbers and enjoyed his work as parts manager for Telford & Doolen. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and “piddling” around in the yard. He was known for his calm and sweet disposition as well as his ability to never seem to age.
He was heartbreakingly preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his oldest son Robert, as well as his three brothers Tommy, Jimmy, Duane, one sister Jean, and his beloved companion, Eloise Mentink.
Del is survived, and his memory forever cherished, by his son Douglas McCann (Karie) and daughter Michelle Gates (Mark) and daughter-in-law Carla McCann. He was a loving grandfather to numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and also the family of Eloise who became as a second family to him.
