Bill was born in Santa Ana, California, to Karl Upton and Carol Dewitt, and moved to Michigan as an infant, where he lived for the rest of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents.
For more than 45 years, Bill shared a deep and enduring partnership with Karen Burgen, rooted in love and companionship. Their bond was the foundation of his life—she was his world, and he was hers.
Bill was a devoted father to his two sons, Brian (Jennifer) Upton and Dennis Upton, and a proud grandfather to Ethan and Elorie Upton. In addition to Karen, his children, and grandchildren, Bill is survived by his siblings John, Ben, and Tammy, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Bill had a wide range of passions and hobbies. He was a lifelong Detroit Lions fan. He loved rock music, games of all kinds, and was interested in knives and firearms. In warmer months, Bill could often be found playing horseshoes, drinking around campfires, or simply enjoying time outdoors. He also loved to go bowling, was an avid reader, and never turned down a good meal—especially fish or burgers. He valued friendly competition, good conversation, and time spent with those closest to him.
Bill will be remembered for his easygoing nature, patience, willingness to help others, and the love he had for his family and friends. His absence leaves a profound void, but his memory will live on through the shared stories and memories of good times now past.
Visitation will be held on March 1, 2026 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Tiffany Chapel, 3232 W Saginaw Hwy., Lansing, MI 48917.
