Don was born July 11, 1920 in Pontiac, MI. Don was the son of Archer and Gracia Merritt. He grew up with his brothers and sisters, moving from Pontiac, to Kalamazoo, then finally settling in Lansing, where he was a graduate of Eastern High School.
He graduated from Michigan State University. While attending MSU he was a member of the men's track and field team and also the marching band. Don served in the United States Air Force during WWII. After serving in the air force, he continued his education at Spring Arbor College. He obtained his degree then followed his Spartan blood back to East Lansing to work for Michigan State University as a purchasing agent. After retiring from MSU, Don spent his days watching his MSU Spartans or Detroit Tigers, but most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Don was an extraordinarily kind and gentle man. He rarely had a negative word to say; even in the foggiest of weather he would respond “What a beautiful day.” The only thing stronger than his kind heart was his handshake. He was always faithful to God, his family and his friends. When asked how he was doing he always responded, “Pretty good shape for the shape I’m in!”
Don is survived by his son, Joe (Lori) Merritt of Holt, daughter, Christine Merritt, who preceded him in death in 2006, grandchildren Julee (Todd) Elsea of St. Johns, Steven (Patricia) Diamond of Ramona, CA., Robert (Natasha) Merritt of Haslett, Da’Neese (Ron) Wells of Holt, Joseph (Kelly) Merritt of Mason, Mandi (Rob) Woodward of Lansing, Timothy Merritt of Holt, eleven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archer and Gracia Merritt, his wife June Merritt in 1992 and his wife Beverly Merritt in 2006.
During our many family gatherings pictures would be taken. As we were about to take the picture instead of saying “cheese” he would say “Someone say something!” So here we are Dad and our Grandpa saying that we love you and will miss you dearly. We all adore the love and support you gave all of us over the years! The best was when we would call to give you news of joy, academic achievement, a new job, marriage or baby. Your enthusiasm regarding our new endeavors was always inspiring and we will dearly miss making these calls.
