March 27, 1943 - May 27, 2012
Donald was born at the St. Lawrence Hospital, in Lansing Michigan, to Ruth and Walter Syrek. He graduated Resurrection in 1961. Then he enlisted in the Navy traveled the globe serving aboard an aircraft carrier. During those early
years he practiced numerous forms of martial arts and self defense techniques. Holding a brown belt in karate. This training proved to be useful during the twenty four years he spent working as a security supervisor at Ingham Medical Hospital. He loved cats and was an avid gun and knife collector. In addition he worked for the Cancer Society for a time and drove limousines for a local car service. Don often said one of the best times he had as a limo drive was driving Tony Curtis. Don was a bright positive personality enhanced by a devilish sense of humor. About seventeen years ago his kidneys failed. At that time he began diligent research on his condition. His goal, to stay as healthy as possible, given the challenge he faced. Devising what he considered the best approach to his nutrition, his mental health, along with the twice weekly dialysis treatments, he flourished. One of his doctors, impressed with his success, suggested that Don write a book describing his practices. Alas, not possible. Time to rest. You will be missed Donny. He is survived by those who loved him, his brother Walt, sister Judy, brother-in-law Jack, all the nieces and the nephews that he cherished, and family members to numerous to list. There will be a Rosary at 5:30 PM on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing officiated by Deacon Thomas Feiten of St. James Catholic Church.
