

Doris Pauline Long, age 96, of Portland, Michigan, passed away on January 24, 2024, in Ionia, Michigan. She was born on March 4, 1927 to jeweler Deward "D.P." and Cora Belle (Bower) Hinchey of Perry, MI. Doris was a selfless, loving, and strong woman with a heart of gold. She was known for her generosity, determination, hard work, and dependability.She married the love of her life, Robert Joseph Long, a retired City of Lansing police detective originally from Eagle Harbor, MI, who preceded her in death in 1996.
Doris leaves behind a legacy of love and is survived by her sister Joan Travis (Hinchey), her children James Long and David Long Sr. (Debra), her grandchildren Danielle Long and David Long Jr. (Aubrey), and her great-grandchildren Shaniyah Fischer and Raelynn Long. She was preceded in death by her parents Cora and D.P. Hinchey and her husband Robert Joseph Long.
Doris attended Perry High School and later pursued her passion for nursing at Mercy School of Nursing. She dedicated her career to helping others as an emergency room charge nurse at St. Lawrence Hospital. After retiring from nursing, she continued to serve her community as an administrator at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes.
She was a former treasurer and founding member of the Cherry Hill Condominium Association in Portland where she resided. She was a member of Portland Methodist Church, and volunteered regularly for AARP, helping local seniors file their federal and state tax returns. Doris and Bob loved classical dance music and enjoyed ballroom dancing at the former Olds Hotel in downtown Lansing and, together, enjoyed steak dinners at the Frontier Restaurant in north Lansing. She loved to read romance novels and could complete an entire word search book in record time.
Doris Pauline Long will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her selflessness, love, and determination will forever be remembered. May her soul rest in peace.
