I am  so saddened to learn of the loss of a great friend and neighbor from N Clemens Street . I got to watch Doug grow up and it was a blessing. He watched my dad (Glen)   build and fix things since he was a little boy. He was invited to help and soon became a fixture at my dad's side This may have been the catalyst for his handyman abilities. He and my late brother Andy were great friends and hung out together as they were growing up. He was a blessing to know and I could tell how much he loved his family! My condolences to the Murdoch family. So sorry to hear of his passing. 

I met Doug in 1985 when he worked under Arnold Nerio at the MSU Union.  The two of them were quite the team, always quick with a joke and had a great way of interacting with their crew. They were the first to empower their crew long before the term was even used and for them it was all about trust and things got done and done right the first time, or if you screwed up, just fess up to it and they'll help you figure out where you went wrong so you know for next time.They were great about teaching how to fix things and troubleshoot. I remember when at a certain time of day you'd see him hanging out by the south entrance door so he could say hello to a beautiful young gal who came to the MSU Union for lunch who had caught his eye and he'd later go onto marry. Doug was someone who could be counted on as a coworker, friend or family member.  He was so very proud of his kids.  I remember him telling me with a silly grin, how sometimes he'd sneak away with their cars and go down to the gas station and fill them up on the sly. 

I Met Doug when I got to MSU in 2008.  Always took time to have a conversation.   We worked together, sat in many a meeting together, and had work conversations, and we discussed what we were doing with our time off-   I found out he was up at School Section lake, an area we visit often ourselves.   I was happy when I found out he retired.. We had talked about it.  I was Looking forward to following him at some point.   Then I found out its a small world, as our friends, Shawn and Megan Norris call Doug , Uncle-   Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you-  Dennis and April Meersdom

I missed working with you & your crew when our office moved out of the Union Bldg. 

Then a short time later you retired and I pictured you at your cabin surrounded by family and enjoying being off the clock.  We both had family cabins in the Mecosta area, although on different lakes. How we never ran into each other, I am still surprised.  We commented about the great bacon and steaks we purchased from Denslow's and donuts from Tim's. 

I hope your family can ease the pain of loss by remembering all the good times that were shared.

My deepest sympathy to the entire Murdoch family and friends that are feeling this unimaginable loss.  I had the great privilege of working with Doug during two tours of duty at the MSU Union.  He was a colleague who became a fast friend over the years and was a man I greatly admired for his honesty,  dedication and hard work.  He was most grateful for and proud of the relationships he developed with the Staff of the Union as well as throughout the University Community,  particularly within the RHS Division,  Physical Plant and Public Safety.   We often spoke of loyalty, integrity and the right way to get things done, which was his hallmark,  getting things done.  To Stephanie, Gina and Tony, you are the core of his existence and he took great joy in sharing a family update at our periodic lunch meetings at Lou Ha's.  It's always been clear it was always family first for Doug.  Additionally, he always shared a word about Maxine's escapades and her endless spirit.  I miss you more than these words can express. I met Doug when I transfer from brody hall to the union building back in 2001. He always had a smile and always said good morning when he got to work in the morning. There were days he would say" I dnt know how you can get up so damn early to come to work  everyday." Its called family ,is what I said.
And he would say "you're absolutely right ".
He always walked so fast that I gave up trying to keep up with him.
I called him Douger and he never corrected us.
He was a great individual who cared about his employees. Rest in Peace Douger.


Doug was a great cousin, like a big brother to the little Miller girls that would tag along at the lake.  He kept an eye on me when I worked at the Kellogg Center during college.  Doug had a great sense of humor, and was gifted with common sense that would let him fix anything.  Attached is one of my favorite posts Doug put on FaceBook.  Can't you just hear him chuckling?  


Doug was a great person and was always kind and helpful to me.
We had many laughs and fun times together at MSU.  I knew him for nearly 30 years and always remember that he had a kind word or a laugh to share, as we figured out how to get things done on the projects we worked on together.  He will be deeply missed.
My sincere condolences, your family is in my prayers.  May God Rest his Soul.

Tony and family, please accept my heartfelt condolences on your loss.  I first worked with Doug here at MSU when I was a student back in the early 90's when he would call into Central Control with a question or request.  I have to say he was very nice and patient with a young kid learning the ropes.  We only ever met face to face a couple of times, but he always seemed to have an easy smile and joy about him, even when he was on the committee interviewing me for a new position in Central Control.  I will always remember our interactions with a smile and will keep all you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.  Rest in peace Doug.

Doug was always part of the Eastern gang that got together monthly at a local establishment to have a few beverages and talk about the past and all subjects imaginable. I was fortunate to be his friend for 40 years and loved his story telling about the high school days. Martha and I miss him and know we will see him once again in God’s timing! RIP Doug!!

Always a Smile and the opinion of the day.  Betty and I  would meet-up at the Flapper for fish on Friday's.  He loved his family and his times at the lake.  His family football party's at the lake were the best. Peace in God's promises 🙏.  Love Dave and Betty  Babian
