Eric "Scottie" Lee, born on April 5, 1924 in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, England, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on May 2, 2017 in East Lansing, MI with his daughter Lorraine and longtime neighbors, Keith and Kathy Phillips at his side. He has joined his wife Helen (2015), father John, mother Florence, granddaughter Diana (2001) and other loved ones that were laid to rest before him including brothers-in-law Jack (Peggy) Curry and Larry (Jo) Curry.
He is survived by his sister Joan Malloy, daughters Lorraine (Joe) Osypczuk, Gail (John) Tobin, Karen (Dan) Ballheimer, granddaughters Tricia Beavers and Tara Ballheimer, and many nieces, nephews and cousins in the United States and Canada.
Scottie was five years old when he moved from England to Brantford, Ontario, Canada with his parents in May of 1929. In 1942, at the age of 18 during World War II, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy as a volunteer. He was originally assigned to convoy duty but was soon transferred to serve on the HMCS Caraquet, a Bangor-Class minesweeper that was part of the 31st Minesweeping Flotilla of the Royal Canadian Navy. His minesweeping group was assigned to help clear mines at the Utah and Omaha beaches the night before the invasion of Europe on June 6, 1944.
After the war, Scottie returned to Brantford, Ontario and attended a trade school to learn the profession of Tool & Die making. He completed his apprenticeship as a Tool and Die maker in 1950.
On June 21, 1947, Scottie married the love of his life, Helen Lorraine Curry. Scottie and Helen moved to the United States in of 1950 and settled in Lansing, Michigan. He was hired as a Tool & Die maker at Adams Tool and Engineering in 1950 and worked there until he retired on June 30, 1989 at the age of 65. Scottie proudly became a United States Citizen in 1955.
Scottie was a people person and was loved by everyone who knew him. He enjoyed golfing very much and was known to play a round with his friends even when there was snow on the ground. He was a long-time member of the Grand Ledge County Club. He also enjoyed bowling during the winter months but was never quite able to attain the same skills of his late brother-in-law, Jack Curry.
The memorial service will be held to honor both Scottie and Helen Lee at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 12, 2017 in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing with The Rev. Dr. Carol Spangenberg officiating. Interment will be later at Deepdale Memoral Park as they have requested to be buried together. They were long time members of St. David's Episcopal Church in Lansing, MI. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday prior to the services.
The family would like to thank the staffs at the Delta Retirement Center, The Willows of East Lansing and Sparrow Hospice for the outstanding care that they provided to both Scottie and Helen. Their loving care made life much easier for not only Scottie and Helen, but for their families as well.
