Mike was born in Lansing MI on March 13, 1949, to parents Bud and Janet (Philleo) Siedelberg. He grew up in Lansing, graduated from Sexton High School and attended Hillsdale College prior to enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. Mike married his high school sweetheart Paula Arney and they lived in Japan and New Mexico before relocating to Colorado.
Mike was an honorably discharged veteran stationed in Japan that served temporary duties in Thailand and South Korea during the Vietnam War. He was a F-4 aircraft radar technician who served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force with honors and commendations. Mike received a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University and a Master of Physics from the University of Colorado. Notable places of employment include Michigan State University, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), SUN Microsystems, and Jackson National Life.
Mike's interests in science and computers took him all over the world. One of his earliest professional scientific endeavors led him to Antarctica where he lived and worked at McMurdo Research Station for a year. His extensive studies of doppler radar and weather (microbursts) led to work on an aviation windshear warning system project that resulted in preventing a commercial passenger aircraft disaster in Denver. He was also a part of the original group of professionals that redesigned the NEXRAD weather system. Mike had a high aptitude for computer programing and security and was highly regarded by his peers.
His passion for work was only slightly subsided by his hobbies in bird species/wildlife observation and environmental causes. His love for a popular sixties band, The Grateful Dead, was evident in the music he personally listened to and the numerous live concerts he attended over the years. Mike is best known for his hard work ethic, integrity, sense of humor, generosity, good will, and for being a teacher, a tutor, a mentor, and a loving father.
Mike is survived by his two children, daughter Shelly Siedelberg, son Michael Siedelberg (Karine Zubialde Siedelberg), and grandchildren Alexie and Nahia. He is also survived by his brothers Tom Siedelberg and Chris Siedelberg, their spouses, children, and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both his parents and his brother Doug Siedelberg.
