Jane Ellen (Henkel) (Boyd) Tabler passed away on March 14, 2018, at The Willows at East Lansing. Jane Ellen – or “Janie” as she was better known to her friends – was born in Lansing, Michigan on October 23, 1921 to Herman and Olive Dobson Henkel, and other than the few years she spent traveling with her first husband, Derwood L. Boyd, while in the Army, Jane spent her entire life in Lansing.
Jane was the oldest living member of Plymouth Congregational Church, coming to the church as a child when her mother directed the choir. She later sang in the church choir for many years. As a young girl, she was one of a few who received their Golden Eaglet pin from the Girl Scouts, continuing to wear it proudly every day. Jane attended Central High School (now part of Lansing Community College) and Michigan State University (as Michigan State College or MSC), receiving her degree in English. She was a member of the Beta Epsilon chapter of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, receiving her 75-year pin in 2017, which she also wore daily. She was also part of the Alpha Chi Trio, singing with a band that included Thomas (“Tommy” back then) Tabler, who would – years later – become her 2nd husband. Jane was also a member of the Junior League of Lansing and the Sparrow Hospital Guild and spent countless hours volunteering at their many activities. She was also involved with fundraising efforts for the newly formed Camp Highfields back in the early 1960’s.
Some of Jane’s fondest memories include family times on Torch Lake in Rapid City, MI; times with “winter friends” in Holmes Beach, FL and countless days playing Bridge with dear and special friends. She loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and always enjoyed when they would come to visit. She also loved to knit with her cousin “Ducky” (Marilyn Eckenrode) and over the years supplied many family members with hats, scarves, comforters and more.
Jane will be remembered for her love of her family, her quick wit and steel-trap mind, her interest in others, her excellent Bridge playing, and her love of music and plants. She made it a point to get to know something about everyone she met, and always encouraged others to be the best they could possibly be. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Jane was predeceased by her parents, her first husband Derwood, her second husband Tom, and granddaughter Lauren Mary Boyd. Remembering her fondly are her three children John (Vicki), Jeffrey (Deborah) and Barbara Boyd; grandchildren Christopher (Lisa) Boyd, Catherine (David) Goldhaber, Jennifer (Peter) Bronsnick, Sara (Michael) Brundage, and Tyler Boyd as well as great grandchildren Karyna, Alec, Sam, Lucas, Joshua, Elizabeth, Madyson, Savanna and Hayley; stepchildren Steve Tabler (Janet), Corbeau Blumenfeld-Jones (Donald), and Barbara Tabler Morgan; step-grandchildren Katie (Nathan) Krakowiak Funk, Heath (Marielle) Krakowiak, Evan Morgan and Carly Morgan, as well as step-great grandchildren Annabelle, Grayson, Sidney, Grant, Colbie and Lleyton.
Janie would like to thank Larry and Suzi Wyman for the years of dedicated service and friendship; her special and faithful friends Eileen (her dear “sister”), Beanie and Marty - and occasional subs - who came to play Bridge with her nearly every Friday for the last 4 years and many other loving and long-time friends. The family would also like to thank the nursing and care teams at The Willows at East Lansing and Great Lakes Caring Hospice.
There will be a private family service, at Jane’s request. Memorial gifts may be made to the National MS Society (National MS Society, P.O. Box 4527, New York, NY 10163, https://www.nationalmssociety.org/), Great Lakes Caring Hospice (3100 West Road Building 2, Suite 110, East Lansing, Michigan 48823), or the charity of one’s choice.
Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits (Psalm 103, v.2)
The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman, Lansing Chapel. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at www.grlansing.com.
