Born and raised in Lansing, John attended Sexton High School and graduated with the class of 1971. He then went on to study in the field of information technology and obtained a degree from Lansing Community College in history. Having worked for the State Department of Education and the Michigan State Police, John was a computer systems analyst for 22 years before he retired and became primary care-giver for his mother-in-law in 2000.
