John Helmer Person, age 86, died on Wednesday, October 1, 2014. He was born in Escanaba, MI on December 17, 1927 to Carl and Judith Person.
He was a Sea Scout where he discovered his love for sailing, and he served in the US Army in World War II. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1952. He worked for over 41 years for the State of Michigan and was Secretary of the State Tax Commission for many years and at his retirement. He was a swimming instructor for Waverly Schools and taught State Equalization and Assessment at local colleges. He was a Registered Professional Engineer in Michigan. He loved U of M Sports, especially football in the Big House.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Judith (Brannstrom) Person, his brother Ernest (Mariette) Person, and his sisters Mary (Clinton) Palmer, Anita (Andrew) Stone, and Lucille Person.
He was a fantastic husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Christine (McAfee) Person of Lansing and by his children, John (Kathleen Tighe) Person of Falls Church, VA; James (Cindy) Person of San Clemente, CA; Margaret (Charles) Lauer of Lansing; Andrew (Victoria) Person of Bloomfield Hills; and Elizabeth (Edward) Goldberg of Grand Ledge. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Laura (Rob) Kwiecien of Lansing, Margaret and Jeffrey Person of Falls Church, VA, Matthew Lauer of Ann Arbor, Zoe and Thor Person of Bloomfield Hills, and Christopher and Jacquelynn Person of San Clemente, CA; his great grandchildren, Gavin and Mason Kwiecien of Lansing; his sister-in-laws Penny Person of Houston, TX and Virginia Richmond of Kingsport, TN; and by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday, October 3rd in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, October 4th at 12 noon at Calvary Lutheran Church, 6301 W. St. Joseph Hwy., Lansing, with Pastor Laura Gerstl officiating. Viewing will be from 11a.m. to 12 Noon Saturday at church. Military Honor will be provided by V.F.W. Post #701 of Lansing. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Calvary Lutheran Church in John Person's honor.
