

John Edward Zink, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 01, 2017 in East Lansing, Michigan and Per. his wishes his body has been donated to MSU College of Medicine. He wanted the up and coming MSU Drs. to experience the true meaning of what it meant to bleed GREEN. Born June 11, 1928 in Madison, Wisconsin, John enlisted in the Army and trained as a paratrooper at the end of the Korean Conflict. John attended college at Michigan Tech University where he worked on his degree in Forestry and met his future wife Shirley. He finished up his schooling at MSU. After settling in the Lansing area he first started working for Smith Tree service and then began a 35 year career in the Grounds Department for Michigan State University where John was recognized on many occasions for going above and beyond the call of duty to keep the MSU campus and Athletic fields looking beautiful, receiving the Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award in 1986. He was a loyal Spartan fan to the end and never missed a Spartan Football game on TV. He was a man of few words and never complained when things where not going well for him. The past year had many bumps in the road for Dad but he always could muster up one of his big toothy grins for you. He loved to read his Tom Clancy novels and his big print Readers Digest. He was a very loved and happy go lucky man.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Elizabeth and his three sisters, Evelyn, Elizabeth and Margaret.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Shirley Zink; daughter, Mary Dolton; sons, David (Kay) Zink, John (Pam) Zink Jr., Larry Zink, and Michael (Michelle) Zink; grandchildren, Kim (Dennis) Consavage, Tina Dolton, Mark (Lori) Zink, Michelle (George) Earle, Adam Zink, Bethany (Josh) Donnell , Madelyn Zink, Lillian Zink, Gloria Zink, Eric Zink, Danielle (Sam) Diekevers, Jared Zink, and Brandon Zink; great grandchildren, Jack, James, Sarah, Bryce, Nolan, and Ezekiel. A Celebration of his Life will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 5pm at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Lansing Chapel, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. The family will receive guests one hour prior to the Celebration.
