Maria Velasquez

Age 86 passed away Monday, February 3, 2014 under the loving care of her family. She was born September 2, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas the daughter of Bruno and Fernanda (Mares) Vasquez. She married Guillermo Velasquez, Sr. and he preceded her in death. Besides her loving husband, Maria was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Mary Ellen Reyna and siblings: Benita Garcia, Jose Vasquez and Bruno Vasquez, Jr. She is survived by her children: Mary Lou Solis, Guillermo Velasquez, Jr., Margarita (Rodolfo, SR.) Soto, Santiago Velasquez and Crispin (Maria) Velasquez, 20 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and siblings: Filomana Herrera, Gloria Sequeda, Minerva Calderone, Yolanda Vasquez, Antonio Vasquez, Santiago Vasquez and Martin Vasquez.

Maria enjoyed sewing, music and watching her favorite Spanish soap operas. She loved getting her family together to spend time with them and cook for them, especially her grandchildren. Her family cherishes that every time Maria would end a conversation or a visit with them, she would always say "Que Dios te bendiga" (God bless you in Spanish). Maria also enjoyed her sweet pastries and would select her favorite to set aside for her own special treat later.

Her family will celebrate her life on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Tiffany Funeral Home, Lansing. Burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Maria's family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be given to the Lansing City Rescue Mission.
