Born October 26, 1913 in Marmaduke, Arkansas, the son of Amsy and Ethel Hampton, passed away January 3, 2012, at the age of 98. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Allie Mae Hampton; two grandchildren, Thom Lee Crist and Robert Thomas Crist. Surviving him are daughter, Barbara (Robert) Crist; son, Jerry (Norma) Hampton; grandchildren, Karla (Doug) Anderson, Nancy (Aric) Owen, Gregory Hampton, Sean (Nikki) Kersey and Scott (Jennifer) Kersey; 17 great grandchildren; brother, Ravis (Carol) Hampton; and sister, Sylvia Lucille (Dan) Seigo. Melvin was a farmer and mechanic, employed with John Bean and Speaker-Hines for many years. He served as a devout member of Maranatha Baptist Church since 1958. Melvin is remembered as a man of great faith, a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, and wonderful neighbor. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 6, 2012 at Maranatha Baptist Church, 2300 N. Waverly Rd., Lansing, with the Rev. Glenn M. Ray, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. Those desiring may make contributions to Maranatha Baptist Church, 2300 N. Waverly Rd., Lansing, or to the Lansing City Rescue Mission, 607 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912 in memory of Melvin.
