Nellie was the cherished daughter of Milo and Anna Covell. Growing up in a large family, she dedicated her early years to caring for her six brothers and four sisters, stopping her education after the ninth grade to support her beloved siblings. Despite the challenges of her youth, she imbued her life with a selfless nature that would define her years to come.
In 1953, Nellie married the love of her life, Junior Russell Bloom. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter, ultimately raising three wonderful children: daughters Marilyn Bloom and Carolyn Korp, and son Gary Bloom. Nellie’s legacy lives on in her beloved grandchildren: Angela (Roberto) Hernandez, Melissa Shipman, and Matthew Korp, who brought her immense joy. She was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Erika Hernandez, Drake Hillman, Mia Hernandez, and Carina Hernandez, who knew her as a warm and nurturing presence in their lives.
Nellie was known for her signature beehive hairdo, which stood as tall and proud as she did—and was just as unforgettable. A devoted waitress, she spent many years serving the community at Knapp's Coffee Shop, Ron and Ruby’s Potterville Inn, and Vince's Coney Island. Her kindness extended beyond her work; she was well-known for going out of her way to provide rides for family and friends, offering her time and heart without hesitation. Throughout her life, Nellie found joy in simple pleasures, whether it was playing bingo, camping with family, or immersing herself in the sounds of country music and attending shows.
Nellie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Junior, six brothers, and four sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn and Carolyn; her son, Gary; her grandchildren; and her great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry her memory forward with love.
A funeral service will be held in her honor on October 30, 2025, at 12:30 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, located at 900 E Michigan Ave, Lansing, MI 48912, with visitation taking place one hour prior. A graveside service will take place the same day at 1:30 PM at Deepdale Memorial Gardens, located at 4108 Old Lansing Rd, Lansing, MI 48917.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Arthritis Foundation and the Alzheimer's Association.
The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the staff of Aria Nursing Home and Chaplain Stephen Ezop for their compassionate care and support during her final days.
