

Bob was born November 19, 1927 in Monmouth Illinois. His family moved and he grew up in Waterloo, Iowa. Bob served in the Army 1946 – 48. He was stationed in Tokyo and managed the post exchange at the headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur. He returned and attended college at Monmouth College and graduated in 1950 with a degree in chemistry.
Bob married Clarice Capron in 1953. They had a very happy marriage for over 64 years. He was very proud of their 5 children.
Bob worked in the chemical industry for 13 years, including a position at the Mellon Institute of Industrial Chemistry in Pittsburg, PA. He then pursued a graduate program at Michigan State University where he earned a Masters degree in School Counseling and a Doctorate in Vocational Rehabilitation.
After a brief time as guidance counselor and coach at Portland High School, Bob took a position with the State of Michigan Vocational Rehabilitation Service. Bob became the head of the agency program evaluation unit and he assisted with or managed a number of state and national projects. Bob was well known in the Vocational Rehabilitation field all over the country through his programs, presentations and publications. He retired from the State in 1989. After retirement he worked as a Career Counselor at Lansing Community College and he volunteered as a mentor for the Lansing School District.
Bob’s enduring interests throughout his life were his family and his Christian Faith.
Bob is survived by his wife, Clarice Struthers, Robert D Struthers, Jr. and his wife Julie, Kathleen (Struthers) Martin, Cynthia Struthers and her husband Rev. Steven Smith, son in law Chuck Stanley, And daughter Shari Nussdorfer and husband Jim. Bob was the proud grandparent of Kyle and Michael Struthers, Doug Driesbach, Cynthia, Robert and Daniel Martin, Jeremy and Mary Smith, and Forrest, Ethan, Michelle Nussdorfer. He has great grandchildren-Justin, Bonniebelle, Natalie, Owen and Quinn.
Bob was preceded in death by his daughter Nancy and son in law Stan Martin who both were victims of cancer.
Memorial service will be 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 21 , 2017 at First United Methodist Church 3827 Delta River Dr., Lansing Michigan with visitation one hour prior.
