

Roosevelt was born on July 19, 1950 in Sunflower, Mississippi to Johnnie Lee Smith and Annie Lora (Trotter) Smith. He went to Gentry High School. He would go on to serve his country in the US Army, stationed in Korea. Roosevelt earned an social degree from Lansing Community College. He worked for GM and Minister Roosevelt Smith would go on to teach as a substitute teacher at Black Child Institution and Foster Community School. Roosevelt enjoyed basketball and football, and loved his friends, family and wife dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Robinson) Smith; stepkids, Lawanda V. (Kim) Beasley and Denray M. Robinson; sisters, Emma Peters, Lillie Wade, Lizzie Brown, Jacqueline Smith and Ora Smith; brothers, George (Bonita) Smith, Billy (Mary) Smith, Roger (Racheal) Smith and Jonathan Smith; brother-in-law, Elder James (Ionie) Robinson; sisters-in-law, Yvonne Robinson and Linda Fleeks; a uncle, Jimmy Trotter; a aunt, Barbara Trotter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Annie Smith; brothers, Johnnie Smith Jr. and Leon Smith.
A visitation will be held Sunday, May 3, 2026 from 3pm to 6pm at the Tiffany Chapel of Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Home, 3232 W Saginaw St, Lansing, MI 48917. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 4, 2026 from 12pm to 1:30pm at One Church, 3355 Dunckel Rd Lansing, MI 48911, with visitation one hour prior to the service at church. Burial with military honors will be held at Ft Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI.
